My colleague has had 2 recent visits from a cochin who sounds as if she seriously needs to get her wings clipped - (i.e she has flown over a fence to get in colleagues garden).

My colleague (henceforth MC) has done a door to door in her neighbourhood to see if anyone is missing a chicken - but to no avail.

MC fears that this stray chicken will be savaged by a fox and is threatening to deliver chicken to my safe custody. I have 3 buff sussex chickens.

I may be a chicken owner but I am a relative novice (only since June / July).....would there be any issues in introducing this stray cochin into an established 3 hen community?

there may be a short period of readjustment to establish pecking order, but should be ok.

Okay thanks - so hopefully no violent attacks on the new girl...

hello!
cochins are lovely. the best way of introducing is to bung her in the roosting box when your other chickens have gone to b ed - they are less likely to be nasty with her once they have spent the night together. but they may well still peck at her a bit (and her them).
buff sussex aren't too pecky though, I'm sure they will all be fine together. my sussex and cochins get on fine.

enjoy her!

Good plan, thanks pph , I'll do just that.

Wow cochins are gorgeous. I'd like one just to scare the dog. Was thinking of getting some but £10 each so I'd jump at this one. I've got new chickens this week and its awful how horrible they can be at first but they soon settle down. Lucky you. What colour is she. I really like the buff ones but the white ones are fab too -look like big fluffy clouds.

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 21:46

Hopefully not PPH!

Although I found the article in the current edition of Practical Poultry re bird flu quite reassuring....

hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

someone else with no facial hair under the age of 50 reads practical poultry!

I'm so excited!

Although I realise I've made one or two assumptions there

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 22:00

You recommended it to me a while ago PPH

A good friend thinks it's a matter of great mirth that my only magazine subscriptions are Practical Poultry and Runners World...rather than Cosmopolitan or something, I suppose!

princesspeahead · 08/11/2005 22:37

oh bloody hell I don't have it on SUBSCRIPTION, I just buy it when there is a particularly pretty chicken on the front

runners world - now THAT is scary

princesspeahead · 09/11/2005 23:10
