Advice wanted on Edmonton, Canada, what is like living there?

this is my first time posting so please forgive any mistakes. I would really appreciate some advice from Canadians or expats who have moved to Canada, on living in Canada specifically Edmonton, Alberta. My husband has the opportunity to work in Edmonton and we would like more info on education, health, housing, cost of living, climate, etc, the good and not so good of Canadian life. Thanks

I'm stayed in Edmonton for about two months while a student, about 8 yrs ago.
Bit dull, but close-ish to the lovely mountains, that's all I remember.
I went in the summer and it was HOT. In the winter it gets very COLD.
He couldn't make it Calgary, could he? More interesting there, and closer to the mountains.

However, given the opportunity of living in Canada, I would be very tempted - it seemed a very safe and supportive country. I'd never live in the US, though!
Good luck, and hope someone more informed comes along soon.

it's cold!

Cold or hot. Flat. Right-wing.

I think I've been to Edmonton, but not since I was a kid.

Canada is safe and clean. I think state education is ok. Alberta's a wealthy province (or it once was) so presumably they can afford good education?

I'd look online for housing costs etc.

You can probably get good info on

I had a friend who lived in calgary and banff - also in alberta, but bang in the rockies. Great quality of life, wildlife, kayak, ski-ing, hiking etc, but i remember she said that she had real trouble getting used to the cold winters - up to minus 40!

Thanks to everyone for the info we are still researching what Edmonton is like. So far most opinions seem to say it has extremes weather wise and its isolated. Weather wise we have lived in Switzerland so use to it being cold but not as cold as -40 !! I was interested to know whether it a good place for a young family to live we have two children one 5 years and the other 5 months.

It's by far the richest province, so lower taxes. It is quite right-wing, the "Texas" of Canada. There's a university there though, as well as the world's biggest shopping mall...
If you're into the outdoors you'd love it I'd say.

This thread from a couple of weeks ago was quite interesting. Not specifically about Edmonton but a few thoughts about life in Canada.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2005 12:30

I suspect Edmonton is more car-bound than other big cities in Canada, but this is pure bias on my part against the mad flatlanders. Well, and the fact that the brutal weather means you'd almost certainly need a car to get around with kids.

I do find Canada more child-friendly, though, in a lot of subtle ways.
