Dear Mum said she'd buy me a laptop - but for a technophobe, what should I ask for?

I want to MN in bed - or how far away can you be?

I want to download my piccies from my digital camera.

I want to burn CDs, but don't know what that means.

And for my 40th, my sis bought me something that plays MP3s, and I don't know what they are, either, but I'd like to have a go.

Any ideas gratefully welcomed. And have I forgotten something important?

TIA

God, it's great to be back on MN!

PMSL! Most laptops these days will do all of the above

MP3's are music/sound files (they're might be abetter definition)

MassacreOHara · 26/10/2005 16:23

should add they're compressed in a specific way but then most sound players play MP3's these days

Can't answer many of your questions - LOl at burning CD's!

But what I can say is if you are having a lap top you must get a wireless connection then you can MN in bed or anywhere arounfd the house for that fact! So make sure you get a laptop taht takes WI FI (mine didn't) or you have to buy a card that costs about £60.

Thanks guys! And thanks for appreciating my lack of knowledge! How does the wireless thing work - is it like a telephone - as soon as you get to the back of the garden it stops working? Or could I MN with a coffee in M&S I've just no blinkin' idea!

I know you're joking but a particular chian of bars (can't think which one) do have a hot spot in them now. where you can connect with wireless.

northerner · 26/10/2005 16:37

Wi Fi is Wireless Fidelity. Basically means that you can use the lap top with any type of hardware, so you have a wireles connection at home but can use your laptop anywhere else that has Wi Fi facilities. As Mascara has said some cafe's offer it now and lots of hotels have it in the bedrooms now, so business travellers simply drop their laptop into the slot thingy (see, very technical me) and voila internet access!

hallowcarla · 26/10/2005 23:15

northerner, so if I'm paying eighteen quid a month to NTL, can I still use the laptop as a wireless, IYSWIM? We have no knowledge in this household, believe me!

hi carla, it doesn't change your monthly cost, that's the same whether you're wireless or not. You need to buy a hub which sits somewhere in the house and connects to the phone line - this acts like a transmitter and your laptop is the receiver. It's great!
