We are living in Ireland at the moment, I'm Irish and DH is English, and we have 2 toddlers.
We are thinking about moving to Cambridge next year or year after.
It has been about 8 or 9 years years since we last lived there and I'm sure Cambridge (and us) has changed loads.
I'm looking for as much info as possible:
renting house
or buying house
good/bad areas
schools
good local websites
anything and everything!

Thanks in advance

I am in Great Shelford Gloworm and it is lovely -as are the neighbouring villages of Stapleford and little Shelford. Easy access to Addenbrookes as well by car or bus, and it has a train station which goes to London and Cambridge.

alliebaba · 22/02/2006 20:09

shelford is lovely. got a friend on cambridge road

Gloworm · 22/02/2006 20:11

i think thats a bit further out than I would like, although its so long since i've been there my geography is a bit sketchedy

No no No, not far out at all only 4 miles to central Cambridge. Bus to Addenbrookes takes 20 minutes , or you can drive it in 10.

alliebaba · 22/02/2006 20:16

my friend works at clifton court and drives ds to school in town every day. doesn't take her long.

alliebaba · 22/02/2006 20:16

anyway it's cambridge...get a bike, ride it like a nutter

Gloworm · 22/02/2006 20:19

how far out is histon? thats about as far out of town as we want to go...its within cycle distance. 2 miles maybe?

or am I just kidding myself? just because I cycled loads years ago?

OP posts:
alliebaba · 22/02/2006 20:20

i'd say nearer to 3 miles

Gloworm · 22/02/2006 20:22

maybe we should get a map and just stick a pin in?

good plan. did you try cheffins

hugeheadofhair · 22/02/2006 20:27

Anywhere along Cherry Hinton Raod towards Cherry Hinton should be good. Stay on the south side of Cherry Hinton Road and you'll be fine for schools too: Morley Memorial school and Queen Edith cp school have both very good ofsted reports (and everybody I know who goes to either is very happy with them)You might have to settle for a two bedroom house if you can't afford to buy over £200k. All the 3 bedroom houses are 200k min, even in Cherry Hinton these days. Great playgroups in this area too, for all ages, as well as good preschool nurseries. Fine family area I would say, with parks and shops all walking distance.

Prufrock · 22/02/2006 20:29

It is further than histon (which is about 2.5 miles - but not for addenbrookes.) And it's the first really seperate village on the south side, but as a big village has all the day to day stuff you need - bank, butchers, bakers, deli, co-op, library, v. good school, park. And easy access to the waitrose at Trumpington.

Let us know when you are coming and we can help organise tours!

just dragged myself away from MN long enough to have a peek at cheffins and bookmark it! It looks like a good website. DH is out at the moment and I need to browse it with him as I need to ask "where is XXX" with every house I look at!

Gloworm · 22/02/2006 20:33

oh wharfRat i'm getting all nostalgic now, those were the days!
I moved to cambridge around summer 1992, although it was probably spring 1993 before I got to know everyone and be considered a regular
I dont remember many female barstaff though! Did you work there when Spencer(tall skiny vegan guy) was there, and it was run by lovely old Peter, or was it Daphne?
