How do you download music and where from?

I am a complete duffer. I can't download music
DS has been chewing his way through my CD collection and I want to download some of my favourite songs.
Can anyone recommend a nice cheap user friendly website for doing this. It needs to either take Paypal or switch/maestro payment and have a fools guide to downloading!

We use Bearshare. They do a free version which is what we have been using for years.

Tescos charge about 80p a track (I think that is relativly expensive - but dead easy)

spagblog · 24/10/2005 09:07

Kid - I don't understand...is bearshare some sort of software? Do I need it?
Katymac - that does sound expensive compared to one that I looked at (but didn't take my cards) I will still take a look though

Itunes. easy to download, and straightforward to use. even my 11 yr daydreamer can do it.
you just go to the apple site (and no, dont need an apple computer) and click free download.the rest is click yes or next kinda thing. tho alot of people are now bound to ocme along and dislike apple/itunes we get on fine with them!

kid · 24/10/2005 09:15

You download the free version of the software. Then you can search for a song and then you download it and save it on your computer.

here is a link to it.

Just click on the free version (on the right hand side of the srceen)

kid - does that mean that all the music you download with bearshare is free ?

spagblog · 24/10/2005 09:58

Last night I found this one...Allofmp3.com
It appears to be Russian and DH says that I would have to be stupid to download music off a russian site...why? It seems okay and the music is 20cents a download.
Am I being naive?

is bearshare ilegal?? How do you know what is legal or not??

sorry I am a dummy too.

bigdonna · 24/10/2005 12:04

we use imesh5 it is free and very easy to use.

expatinscotland · 24/10/2005 12:08

I don't. Used to, but kept getting annoying viruses, spyware, etc. It just wasn't worth it in the end.

LilacBump · 24/10/2005 12:08

bearshare and soulseek are filesharing programs. so people put up songs and others download them. i would feel safer buying songs on itunes etc because i know it is legal.

kid · 24/10/2005 12:31

I don't know if its legal or not. We always download songs fropm there for personal use, not to sell them. I also have panda antivirus to hopeully prevent getting a virus.

NomDePlume · 24/10/2005 12:33

I use www.mp3search.ru It's a Russian site but is in English, you pay in US$. Albums are around $1.10 to d/l and individual songs are $0.07 !!!! Really good value site, but not updated enough really. Excellent value though when you compare to iTunes at 75p a song ! It is all legal and above board.

FWIW, I wouldn't do file-sharing. Too risky

madmummyof2 · 24/10/2005 12:34

i also have bearshare. the free version is sponsered so everynow and then you get a pop up

it is legal as you are only sharing files that have already been purchased and they site fee's are paid by teh poeople who advertise on there.

i am really dumb when it comes to these things and even i manage it ok.

kid · 24/10/2005 12:36

glad someone else can explain how bearshare works, I don't know much about it other than I get music from there!
