scruples...do you have any, not sure if I should own up?

I suspended my gym membership towards the end of my pregnancy and took it up again in August.

The money comes from an account we use solely for bills. We don't check the statement very often. When I checked it the other day, I noticed the gym are debiting £10 a month rather than £45 since I reinstated my membership (they were previously taking the correct amount).

It's their mistake, not mine. would you point it out to them? If they notice at a later date, can they get the money back from me?

Am currently enjoying a swanky gym membership for £10 a month! As I'm on maternity pay, this is a real bonus, hence the temptation!

i have to be honest here and say... no, i wouldn't own up... not yet at least!

skinnycow · 20/10/2005 21:14

see it that they only WANT to charge you £10! and enjoy it.

I wuldn't own up but I would keep money set aside in case they demand it all at a later stage

hatstand · 20/10/2005 21:19

in these circumstances, no I probably wouldn't own up. If they came asking I'd feign ignorance but probably agree to pay up. In the meantime I'd lie awake every night perfecting my discovery speech and praying they cornered me over the phone not face-to-face

startingtobehalloweenylover · 20/10/2005 21:21

i would do it until i got too scared and then cancel the membership! lol

spidermama · 20/10/2005 21:24

Once I owned up to Sainsbury because they gave me a ten pound voucher which I shouldn't really have had. The man on the 'phone from Sainsbury actually laughed at me. He couldn't believe I was owning up and he said, 'Look, it really doesn't matter. Just forget about it.'

I would have to own up, but my dh would do all in his power to stop me.

megandmogwai · 20/10/2005 21:35

they can't actually prove I've been using the facilities. I have a card I'm supposed to swipe, but I lost it during the period the membership was suspended. When I went back, I noticed their admission procedure had become quite slack - some people show their cards and some just walk in. I just walk in.

I have no problem with not fessing up, it's just the thought that they might ask for it back...would they be able to demand I paid it?

question is wether you have signed anything to agree to pay that amount of money, if so and they catch up with you and demand the money I'm afraid you would have to pay them.

Nightynight · 20/10/2005 21:38

depends what you signed when you joined?
but normally, I wouldn't have thought so. It would be pretty bad publicity for them apart from anything else

"new mum declared bankrupt because incompetent swanky gym greedily asks for back subs" in the local paper!

megandmogwai · 20/10/2005 21:43

I can't remember - it was 4 years ago. I have signed a direct debit form for them to take £45 a month. Does that hold any weight?

OP posts:
startingtobehalloweenylover · 20/10/2005 21:47

well if you' ve signed it and they don't take it then surely that's their problem?

jasper · 20/10/2005 22:17

Yes I would own up.

moondog · 20/10/2005 22:20

Nah...their problem not yours.

QueenVictoria · 20/10/2005 22:20

Tricky one! I dont think i would own up but only because its unlikely they would if they were charging you too much and you hadnt noticed. Thats what my old company used to be like anyway.

weesaidie · 20/10/2005 23:08

In all honesty, no I wouldn't.

madmummyof2 · 20/10/2005 23:12

hmm the only prob is if the eventually find out and try to charge you the backdated fee's.

if i were you i would put the extra money aside in case they do for 6 months. then if they still havent found out then its their own stupidity and i'd go gat a nice pamering day.

megandmogwai · 21/10/2005 19:53

I'm thinking that I could own up in about six months, telling them I've only just noticed and haven't used the facilities anyway, what with being a frazzled new mum. And that way I save a bit of money AND own up. Surely they couldn't be so callous as to make me pay it back?

Moondog, I knew YOU had no scruples

hana · 21/10/2005 20:26

i would tell them

skinnycow · 21/10/2005 20:28

i froze my membership for a set period and requested to re-freeze it again but unfortunately they continued to draw the full amount which they never paid back so it if was a national gym beginning with V - then dont worry Ive already paid for you !

megandmogwai · 21/10/2005 20:50

he he

It's a chain of hotels, doesn't begin with V though!
