l have been having a sort out at home and found some library books. I am ashamed and have no excuse, they are two years overdue.

I am returning them now, God knows what the fine will be. I feel like a naughty girl sent to see the headmistress.

my mum works in a library. the other day a man bought a book back that he'd had since 1994!!!!

thisisyesterday · 21/02/2011 15:22

did you not receive a letter about them before?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 21/02/2011 15:24

I have a library book that I took out when I was at middle school. I am now 39... Blush I have considered returning it but the school is no longer and they are currently building shoeboxes executive apartments on the site.

TheSydenhamSet · 21/02/2011 15:25

my mum has one from the mid 70s.

it hasn't been returned as it's charlie chaplin's autobiography with his autograph. She was walking down Kennington Road, SE London and he got out of a rolls royce to show his wife the house he lived in as a child. my mum was at that time reading his autobiography that she'd borrowed from the library and she had it in her bag! So weird!!

if ever she sells it (and i'm sure it would go for something) she'd give the library some of the money.

I have a book that was due back at the school library in 1982, I heard the librarian saying how tatty it was and that it would be thrown away when returned so I liberated it!

starfishmummy · 21/02/2011 15:27

Ask if they have an amnesty on fines!

KirstyJC · 21/02/2011 15:27

I have a book that I took out of library in 1992 Blush. I don't know why they haven't chased me for it as I notified them of my changes of address?

I keep seeing it every 6 months or so and put it out to take back, but then it gets tidied away again and I forget again.

Maybe I should just buy a new copy and post it anonymously to the library? Would certainly be cheaper than paying the fine I expect, and they would get a shiny new book instead of a very well used one.....

Would be interested to know what your fine for 2 years comes to!

jenandberry · 21/02/2011 16:17

They cap their fines at £9. We have some others at home that we need to look for. Hopefully they are at home.

We have moved, they must have sent letters to the old address . They were very nice about it.

I have an outstanding bill with the library at the moment of £45 Shock

I had some for about 5 years. I just quietly deposited them on a chair when I was leaving the town for good

said · 21/02/2011 16:23

A chair in the library. Obviously.

Clarnico · 21/02/2011 16:27

I have checked the library books on my shelf - due back Feb 4th.

Fortunately they are children's books so there will be no fine. I hope.

jenandberry · 21/02/2011 20:03

I feel a little better now.

I once had books that were overdue by three or four years - I had paid the fine but was too ashamed to go back to the library with the books. After a while the guilt was eating me up, in the end I rang them and was told I could drop them off at the county council offices no questions asked, as an amnesty. Blush but still, they got them back in the end.

QuickLookBusy · 21/02/2011 20:26

I still have "Mr Gumpy's Outing" from 1999Shock. It was on my ticket rather than DDs, so the fine would be dreadful!

I had forgotten about it-thanks for reminding meGrin

BooBooGlass · 21/02/2011 20:27

I returned some almost a year overdue when I had PND. They cap the fines here so in reality it wasonly about a tenner, and the lady took pity and waived it anyway Grin
