It's really been a whole year.
Hope you're looking down and smiling John
Hope John Peel day happens every year on this day.

Someone has painted a huge mural on the side wall of a building just down from Brighton Station with a picture of his face. It says 1945 - 2004. I well up every time I see it.

A great man.
A sad loss.

John Peel is the only "celebrity/famous person" whose death has upset me. We were on our way back from Cornwall just going over the bridge with permanant roadworks nr Bristol when we heard the announcement. Remember it vividly -felt choked.
I guess listening to his shows as a teenager, then student, then mum was such a big influence on my life and musical tastes. Agree too how he spoke with such passion and love for his family.

Gobbledispook · 13/10/2005 14:36

Y'know, it's sad when anyone dies. What is so great about John Peel??

flea · 13/10/2005 14:38

13th was the day of his last braodcast on radio 1

hornbag · 13/10/2005 14:46

Gobblidispook -I think its when its someone you haven't actually met but they've affected or influenced an aspect of your life. I heard John Peel through 3 decades of my life so to suddenly not have that was odd.
I guess its each persons personal experience. Personally when Princess Diana died I found it ridiculous how thousands of people laid flowers and mourned outside Kensington Palace. Did she have such an affect on those people? (hope thats not too contraversial for any Diana fans out there but just showing how its "different strokes for different folks" or whatever the expression is)

bundle · 13/10/2005 14:46

gdg you obviously didn't "grow up" with him

Groggymama · 13/10/2005 14:54

Thombat thanks for starting this thread we had to write an essay at school on who is the greatest influence on your life and I wrote about John Peel

Marina · 13/10/2005 15:22

She's way too young bundle
I've been reading the serialisation of Margrave of the Marshes in the DT - some of the stories of his younger days are very
Hugely missed

teeavee · 13/10/2005 15:25

He was unique and irreplacable - such a gaping hole left after him

He championed so many excellent Welsh bands - did more single-handedly for them than everyone else put together

I'll never forget him playing mahalia jackson singing 'You'll never walk alone' after the Hillsborough tragedy, and then crying on air - it was so moving.

ThomBat · 13/10/2005 16:48

Jan - It's actually the anniversary of his last ever show on Radio 1.
gGd that gives me an instant lump in my throat as I type it
His death was not long after obviously, but that's what John Peel day is all about, his last show.

His death was in the news the day after my ds was born, and (in my admittedly morphine-and-hormone-befuddled state as a new mum) it seemed incredibly that he was gone, and so suddenly - I'd listened to his show throughout my pregnancy and really appreciated his efforts to bring more left-field music to boring old Radio 1.

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 13/10/2005 17:44

CONCERT ON RADIO TONIGHT TO CELEBRATE HIS LIFE

JanH · 13/10/2005 22:45

Ah, thank you, TC (TB) and flea - missed that. Glad there is a good and sensible reason (?)

Marina, I've been reading Margrave too, online - they were so hippy and sweet. Love it that he loathed S Bates so much. (Me too.)

ediemaybeabat · 13/10/2005 23:07

He was the man.
"teenage kicks, so hard to beat..."

JanH · 13/10/2005 23:57

his family

wysiwyg · 13/10/2005 23:57

Yeh have to agree was really sad when Peely died.
Spent many a late night at University listening to his show (mid eighties) the Smiths, the Pooh Sticks, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Fall....
My kids'll never understand

wysiwyg · 13/10/2005 23:58

Oh and I forgot to mention now that I am an aging old g** - Home Truths on Radio 4.
