Have you ever ignored a really strong gut feeling? And if you have, what happened?

Just curious about anyone's experience.

I have two:
One, my family were trying to sell a piece of property (had been trying for several years), and a buyer came up. I didn't have a good feeling about him at all, actually thought he was a bit of a crook, but agreed to the sale (it needed all our agreement). Sales contract signed and everything... the buyer ended up defaulting on the payment, causing us a huge amount of hassle and financial losses. Grrr. Really wish I'd spoken up (but don't know if I'd have been listened to).

Two, recently hired someone to do a job in our house, and then had to stop the arrangement for financial reasons. She did a good job, nothing to complain about, but for some odd reason I never liked taking her phone calls, always dreaded answering the phone, usually let it go to voice mail and then checked the message before ringing back. It was never anything bad, ever! I've no idea where this feeling came from. But when I had to terminate the agreement this week, I had the strongest feeling of "thank f*ck she's out if my house". I wonder if I'll find some reason for this feeling (hope not!!) but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I'd trust gut instinct every time. We had a business partner a good few years back. On paper he was ideal, said all the right things etc - but I had the strongest weirdest feeling that he was something sinister. I was right. He was. I didn't listen to my instincts. It was a very expensive mistake.

Yep. Not quite the same - one night, 3 times I had the feeling I should phone my Nanna, but since it was mostly connected with why I couldn't get hold of my Mum, I didn't do it because I didn't want to worry my Nanna.
She died the next day of a sudden massive heart attack - I was heartbroken that I hadn't spoken to her the night before. :(

I listen to my gut instincts now...

Oh I do.

A new guy started at my work and I couldn't take to him, he seemed very 'off' and gave me the creeps a bit. He has since been sacked as...it turned out he was a S&M porn star...Grin

I very much go by my gut all the time, I think even if things don't work out you will know that you did what you thought was right at the time.

Yes. Some years ago I had 2 interviews for a management post in medium sized company. Had a very bad feeling both times about the people interviewing me - they were late, didn't listen to what I was saying, weren't organised etc.
Started the job to find there was a senior management clique - based on attending the same church. They lied about stupid things like who used a specific company car, were racist, didn't trust their employees (covert audio recording) and were quite awful employers. I walked out after 6 weeks (same time as another manager who started 4 weeks before me) because we couldn't stand it.

Never walked out of a job before or after..... ever since I've listened to my gut feeling!

TBH I think you can have 'fake' gut instincts- I had them throughout pregnancy...I just know I'll miscarry/probs at scan/disability at birth etc but maybe thats just anxiety of pregnant women!

PaperView · 06/02/2011 15:33

No i trust my instinct but i question it a lot at the moment.

Jacksmama · 06/02/2011 15:44

Why are you questioning your instinct, PPV?

And I'd say that pregnant anxiety shuts off a normally working gut instinct :o - had a few of those, I did!

Couple of things JM - one is a long story. The other is that i know my instinct is right but i have to The Right Thing before i can act upon it :/ The problem with that is that i don't if it IS the right thing so .....

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 06/02/2011 19:44

Generally not. When I did that Myers Briggs thingy I got such a high score for logic and such a low score for intuition (or whatever MB calls it) that it looked as if the questionnaire had been completed by an android.

Years ago we were renting a house and a pipe burst. The landlord was great and got an emergency plumber out the same day, well known with a great reputation.

The work took him over a week to complete, and in that time I could not stand being in the same room alone with him. I have no idea why, but I just had this awful feeling about him, I made him a cup of tea one afternoon and as I passed the cup over a horrible cold feeling went through me. Dh thought I was barking.

Anyway he finished the work and I didn't think much more about it.
Three years later he was in the papers, he had been charged with a serious sexual assault on a customer he was working for and got sent down for it Shock
