This morning dh left the house at 4.30am to be picked up at 5am for work. He knew he was working in Perpignan, which is about a 4hr drive from here, but as far as he knew, he'd be back in time for tea.

I just got a phone call to say that they are refusing to bring him back. The truck driver who gave him a lift says that he cannot drive as he's worked his full hours, and there is another job on in the same place tomorrow. He has no change of clothes, no-one told him until just now and no-one bothered to tell me either. (It's 5pm over here)

I just phoned his boss and after a strained conversation, him not understanding me and me not understanding him, I tell him that it is not fair to leave him in Perpignan and for no-one to have the courtesy to let either of us know what is going on. I have 2 children and they know I work, but they don't know if it's f/t or not. What if I needed to make arrangements? Anyway I told him on the phone that I did need notice to make arrangements with my work and with the children. He says I will see dh tomorrow night, but poor dh will be knackered, and filthy! His psorasis is really bad atm and he has none of his creams with him!

I'm just fuming that they have done this! Is this allowed? Am I just being sensitive or is this really not on?

WTF? If it's a work trip, they should pay for his return home - whether it's in a taxi, coach, train, etc. And whether or not the person is single, married, kids, etc.

That's b*&locks!

auntymandy · 11/10/2005 16:16

I would be annoyed too, but is there an alternative?
Give the kids an early tea and early bed and try to relax. Stressing wont change it!

QueenVictoria · 11/10/2005 16:16

Sounds a bit orf if you ask me. Dont kno if its "illegal" tho.

MrsDoolittle · 11/10/2005 16:16

Very unreasonable

ScummyMummy · 11/10/2005 16:16

Poor you and dh, rhuby. Sounds like one of those mix ups that happen sometimes but are hugely annoying. Are there no buses or trains from Perpignan to yours if dh is desperate to get back tonight?

auntymandy · 11/10/2005 16:17

I asume they are paying for him to stay over?

sharklet · 11/10/2005 16:19

Rhubarb, your not being over sensitive at all. It is unreasonable and unfair to do this, its just such a shame that many people just don't think and probably didn't consider the implications. I'd be really peeved if I suddenly found myself having to stay overnight in another town when I had nothing with me. I know my DH would be livid (he sufferes from bad psoriasis too and is an itchy flacky mess if he doesn't have his creams and his coal tar shampoo)

I'd be like you and furious if it happened to DH - that sort of thing does happen to us as DH is in the military and they have a very like it or lump it mentality.

Hope it doesn't mess things up too much for you!

Emma xx

I should bloody well hope they are paying him to stay over! I just feel so sorry for dh, he worked 10 hours yesterday and came home feeling knackered. He was up with the larks this morning and now he can't even come home and relax! He says he was not told at all until now, by the truck driver! But when I phoned his boss, he knew all about it!
I'll probably get him sacked him now as I had a real go at him! But it's just that dh isn't very happy in this job anyway, and I've been persuading him to stick at it so we can stay in France. God knows what he's going to do now!

I have no idea about trains, but since they want him back there tomorrow, there doesn't seem much point in him catching a train that'll take around 3 hours to get here.

Rhubarb · 11/10/2005 16:56

Thank you! But I was kinda hoping for more sympathy here!!!!!!

Trollsbane · 11/10/2005 16:57

You are not being sensitive. I would be sooo angry!! and wouldn't let him work there again.

suzywong · 11/10/2005 16:57

Bloody French!!!!!@!

Rhubarb · 11/10/2005 17:00

That's better! Merci!

gingerbear · 11/10/2005 17:01

not on at all. I would be pissed off too. Not so much 'A Year in Provence' as 'Overnight in Perpignan'. Doesn't have the same appeal at all.

gingerbear · 11/10/2005 17:02

Merde!

gingerbear · 11/10/2005 17:03

Bet he didn't even have his breakfast fry-up either this morning?
Plus de Merde (excuse grammar)

Rhubarb · 11/10/2005 17:06

I can't even phone to ask how he is as he left his mobile phone here this morning, and I'll bet his skin is itching like mad! Might have to postpone my affair with the JCB man!

OP posts:
moondog · 11/10/2005 17:15

What job is he doing rhubarb?
Is he French?

Rhubarb · 11/10/2005 17:38

No, neither of us are French, we're here for an adventure! He's working for an employment agency who have hired him out to a plant hire company. He's been with them since July, operating diggers, manual labour, etc. He was working nights on the motorways, and apparently this is what this job is now, putting up crash barriers after an accident. I'm just mad because I know how tired he is, if they had asked him to stay overnight he would have said no, but they didn't even ask. And as I said, he's supposed to put cream on his skin at night and in the morning every day or it gets really bad. And what notice is it at 5pm?

If I'm mad I can only wonder how he's feeling!

OP posts:
moondog · 11/10/2005 17:52

Oh good for you two!!
Bloody wrong though to leave him stranded like that.

Rhubarb · 12/10/2005 09:30

Oh oh oh! He telephoned late last night, about 10.30pm, after I'd been worrying about him and feeling sorry for him all day. He borrowed someone's mobile and phoned to say what a great time he was having! I told him I'd phoned his boss to complain and he said "you did what???", but he sounded so depressed when he first called and he didn't say no when I asked if I should call his boss! He said he'd been out in Spain and had a terrific time!

I hate all men! I'm gonna have that affair now, to think I actually thought of postponing it for him! Stupid man! Bloody stupid man!

Ah Rhubarb...!
You are obviously such a lovely wife!

Rhubarb · 12/10/2005 20:15

He has JUST got it, it's 9pm over here, he's working at 7am tomorrow. He's had nothing to eat all day as he had no money with him.

But he's for sale now so I don't care!
