DP has another new job, only three months after he started the last one. But he is finally in the role he has been aiming for since leaving uni, and we are on the move!

The job is in Camberley, so we are looking to move close by. We don't know the area well, so would appreciate any recomendations of nice areas, good schools etc.

TIA

What is your budget and what are you looking for ???

RachD · 06/10/2005 15:57

How close do you want to be, Kelly ?
How far is DP prepared to travel ?
What budget?
They have a fab M&S in Camberley.
The villages on the A30 - towards Sunningdale are nice.
Money, money, money.
We would live there if we could !!!

sweetheart · 06/10/2005 16:31

Fleet and Farnham are nice - there are lots of little villages around too if you don't want to live in a town.

I'd avoid Aldershot, Farnham, Blackwater, Yately and Basingstoke if I were you.

There are really good schools in Fleet, Hartley Wintney and Farnham areas.

On the other side of Camberley you also have places like Ascot and Sunningdale which are nice but very very ££££££.

Make sure you avoid the "Old Dean" estate in Camberley

fimac1 · 06/10/2005 16:38

Used to live in Yateley which was really nice - good schools then but it was in 1974!

Kelly1978 · 06/10/2005 16:39

we're going to be renting to start with as I'm not working so cant afford to buy. ATM we pay £800PCM, can afford a bit more.

Sweetheart

Oh, just read your post! Out of interest why avoid Yateley?

Kelly1978 · 06/10/2005 16:40

oh and dont really want to be more than half hour drive away from dp's work - camberley center.

Sweetheart have you been drinkint ??

Fuddled of Farnham

sweetheart · 06/10/2005 16:45

whoops - I meant I'd avoid Aldershot, Farnborough, Blackwater, Yateley and Basingstoke. All the places I've mentioned are within a 1/2 hour drive of Camberley.

Sorry fimac1 - I didn't mean to offend anyone. I personally wouldn't want to live in Yately, I know there are some nice parts but IMO there are some horrible parts too. Also I think there are nicer areas around.

Kelly1978 · 06/10/2005 16:49

I'm really not sure how rural to go. I've lived in Croydon the past year, andthe countryside is appealing but I'm not sure how easy it would be to meet people and not get bored. Big decision.

Sweetheart, I was going to ask what was wrong with Yately but I see you answered that one while I was busy changing my name (I am gingernut).

Anyway, Wokingham is nice .

sweetheart · 06/10/2005 16:53

There are lots of places around this area that are right on the verge of being in the country but are also near to big towns. It's one of the nice things about the area - you can be either in London, by the sea or in the New Forest within an hour.

sweetheart · 06/10/2005 16:54

ohh yes, I'd agree - Wokingham is nice, but I'd avoid Woking! I always get those two muddled up!

Kelly1978 · 06/10/2005 16:55

ooh the new forest. Ive never been there. And I'm confused too. Think I goin have to write a list of places to check out, and to avoid.

I live in Camberley (-:

DS goes to school in Yateley as the local school (which my house backs onto) has got a terrible OFSTED report the last few times. Even reports of closing it down!

I have to say that getting DS to school which is about 5 miles takes me a good 1/2 hour during rush hour in the morning. So to live within 1/2 hour travel you would not be able to go that far from Camberley itself.

We lived in Lightwater a few years ago and paid £700 a month for a fairly small 3 bed place. The 3rd room would only just hold a single bed. We found that area a bit too quiet. Bagshot is not far from Camberley either.

I think all areas have their good and bad parts. The only places I would say to definitely avoid is The Old Dean in Camberley, Sandy Hill in Aldershot/Farnham and Totland in Farnborough.

You could probably also go more towards Guildford/Farnham way down the A331.

Kelly1978 · 06/10/2005 19:15

Ok thanks for that. Dp is going to be workign not far from the big multi-storey for the shopping center so I'm guessing traffic is going to be pretty bad around that area in the mornings? Do you mind telling me where the Old Dean area is and where that school is? Don't want to be too nosy, but We really want to find somewhere nice to settle for a good few years!

I've been looking at some of the areas suggested and there seem to be a lot more properties available in Camberley than some of the surrounding areas, and closer to work would be a bonus.

The Old Dean is just off the A30 as you go out of Camberley towards London.

The schools to try for include Pine Ridge (I can't remember the name of the second).

Unfortunately they get like 100 applicants for 60 spaces or something ridiculous. We had no hope of getting DS into either of them.

Camberley Infants is meant to be an fairly good school. It's about 5 minutes walk from the big multistorey in town!

DS goes to Yateley Manor. Unfortunately we pay through the nose for that but he does get a class size of 11!

Camberley does have train station smack in the middle so perhap looking at places down the line from this could be an option?

You will have to let us know where you decide on (-:

Kelly1978 · 07/10/2005 08:36

Thanks for all the info, it's really helpful. It looks like finding a school is going be the hardest aspect. I mgiht ahve to call the council and find out where has places. I've got a driving test in 6 weeks, but we're hoping to move before then. Prob going have to come back here to take it. 'Til I pass I can't really travel very easily as I have four kids.

Hello. I'm looking at all these areas too - what are the quietist to least quiet areas? I was considering Bagshot as it's just 10 mins from camberley but not sure if it's too quiet for a single person? Also looked at Basingstoke but has mixed reviews?
