I went back to uni in September and I've nearly finished my first big assignment, wahey! Grin
I've made a web page and applied two different styles to it.

I need to get some feedback on the two pages from adults and children, and I wondered if any of you lovely lot (and/or your lovely DCs) might be up for helping?

All I need is for a few people have a look at these two pages and let me know what you think. e.g. which one do you prefer? What do/don't you like about them? Any other comments?

Version one

Version two

It's my first proper attempt so I really don't mind if you think they're rubbish - I'm well aware I've got a long way to go until I'm a fully fledged web designer! I'd appreciate any feedback, good or bad.

TIA Grin Grin

Just hadaquick look and wanted to mention you are outing yourself, areyou OK with that?

shufflebum · 08/01/2011 14:23

Just very briefly and I'm no expert, DH is though so will try to remember to get him to look later.
Much prefer V1, it's clear and logically laid out and modern.
V2 looks very amateur imo but I have a feeling that it might appeal to children more, not sure why though!

threefeethighandrising · 08/01/2011 14:24

If anyone does review it, I'd be very grateful if you could please let me know

  • whether you're an adult or a child
  • how old you are if you're a child

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 08/01/2011 14:24

I agreed V1 looks more professional, but asIsay only had aquick look so far

threefeethighandrising · 08/01/2011 14:26

Thanks StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar, that's nice of you to point it out. But I don't mind anyone knowing who I am, I don't really discuss anything very confidential on mumsnet.

I have other profiles for that Wink

Thanks shufflebum, good feedback Smile

I prefer version 2 however it still needs tidying up, some words are running off the text area and title buttons are not equally spaced.

On version 1 some of the text is hard to read as it blends into the background. Also the 'what's on this page' list is behind the title.

Hope this helps. Smile

hobbgoblin · 08/01/2011 14:31

I'm an adult
I prefer the first one as it is nice and clean and clear but striking
I don't like comic sans
Your links become a little difficult to read as you go across the graphics in that section
On the second one, the layout is a little close to the borders in places
On the first one the Tabs at top are obscured
I love the images, they look very high quality

Think both are brilliant first efforts :)

shufflebum · 08/01/2011 14:32

btw I'm an adult (30)

threefeethighandrising · 08/01/2011 14:33

Hi pinkem, thanks for the feedback Smile

Can I ask - are you looking at it on Internat Explorer by any chance?

I should have said it's best viewed on Firefox. Our tutors are going to mark it in Firefox and said not to worry about making it work on all browsers (we'll do that later).

So if you're looking at them on Internet Explorer in particular it might well look a bit dodgy!

If you're looking at it in Firefox and it's doing that though I'm in trouble!

Aw thanks hobbgoblin Blush

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 08/01/2011 14:36

OK fair enough :)
I too preferred 1
Iam an adult
Things I didn'tlike (minor niggles)

Background image gettingin the way of textmaking it slightly harder to read
Grey box at bottomdoesn't really fit
Links attop RHS (to same page) don;twork well, and titles aren't consistent-do you really need tem-is page going to get much bigger?
Pages have no titles

ThingsI liked:
All text (inc menus) resizes wonderfully
Thumbnails expandingon hover

Version2, didn'tlike all the boxes, looked morecluttered
"Games"link at top not in line with rest
Generallynot keenon dino silhouettes

In generalI liked both tho and have focussedmoston what I didn't!

pinkem · 08/01/2011 14:36

I am the only one that prefers version Two? I think it looks more fun and if a website has a child's activity on it surely it should look good to a child?

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 08/01/2011 14:36

Oh right, am on IE too

hobbgoblin · 08/01/2011 14:37

I'm using Firefox, sorry. It isn't really bad, just a teeny bit skewed in places. More so on the second except for the title part on first which is obscured.

Jjust in case I opened these in wrong order ( clicked to open new tab at same time so not sure whch order I viewed) by first I mean the greeny one with leaves down the side!

pinkem · 08/01/2011 14:38

Just seen your feedback, I'm viewing it on internet explorer so your safe Grin

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 08/01/2011 14:38

yes, leafy oine is V1

ChunkyBrewster · 08/01/2011 14:42

I think both are brilliant, well done.

I liked version 1 the best. The graphics and colours looked better and it felt more professional. From a superficial point of view, if I was using a recipe from the web, I'd "trust" that site more.

Good luck with your assignment!

werewolf · 08/01/2011 14:46

I prefer version one. Clear and striking.

Felt it could do with at least one bigger picture.

Adult.

threefeethighandrising · 08/01/2011 14:47

Thanks for your replies everyone, I really appreciate it. I wasn't sure if anyone would reply and this is good stuff.

I've banned myself from mnetting until I've handed my coursework in. (This doesn't count, of course Wink) So I was really pleased with myself when I though of a way that I could include mumsnet in my assignment Grin.

Mumsnet is probably going to pop up quite a bit on my course, I reckon. One of my fellow students had to write about how the internet is changing the way people approach their health ("we're all experts now") and so I pointed him in the direction of the mumsnet health topic, of course.

ChunkyBrewster - "trust" - that's good one, thanks.

I'll definitely include that in the report I have to write to go with it.

OP posts:
threefeethighandrising · 08/01/2011 14:53

werewolf I do have another picture up my sleeve that could go on it actually.

I'm having to sit on my hands to not make changes as people suggest them! (I've been fiddling about with this for days!) - it makes more sense if everyone sees the same thing.

sofaaddict · 08/01/2011 14:59

I'm an adult, I prefer version 1. Sorry, no more time to expand on that! Good luck!

threefeethighandrising · 08/01/2011 15:00

Thanks sofaaddict Smile

Does anyone happen to have any bored DCs hanging around the house, just waiting for someone to ask them to review a website?

The adult reviews are great - keep em coming Grin

But it would be brilliant if I could get some reviews from some DCs too. I can't ask my DS as he's just 2!

Although he did point at it and say "dinosaur!" with a big grin earlier so I took that as the toddler seal of approval.
