I have just ordered my mountain of first Cash's name tapes. What's the alternative to sewing? A lot of the clothes don't have labels large enough to write on and some don't have labels at all. Nobody seems to make iron on labels.

You could try the boil wash for the off white polo shirts. I boil wash loads of whites even ones with logos, pale pastel colours and beige/cream jeans, always come up great.

If they get wrecked, they are two in a pack for £3 in Asda !!!

don't try coddy. spend the time you'd have used bleaching perfecting your chain stitch instead...

ps coddy my email isn't sending (just receiving) so have an outbox full of fascinating emails to you that you'll just have to wait until tomorrow to receive. I'm off for my bath now!

Bells, there's a link from Mumsnet home page for iron-on/sew-on labels. I've just ordered some so I'll let you know if the iron-on bit works !

ds1 starts this term- but not for another 3 weeks (they want to settle the other children before dealing with him). He's only going to be going for one morning a week, but somehow I seem to have ended up with 4 pairs of school trousers- not sure how that happened.

I ordered a bunch of iron on tapes then my friend told me about laundry markers......

Still have to get school shoes but I'll wait until all the others are back at school before venturing out.

I've discovered some fabric paint in a small bottle with a squirty point at the end.

It's brilliant for shoes, trainers, and even socks (under the foot bit)

All you do is write childs name or initials, and leave it to dry overnight. Will wash in machine, and some of ds socks still going strong after 1 yr at school.

You'll find it in craft shops or haberdashers.

When my dd started school last year for the first time I got Iron on labels from the sewing shop in town. A few weeks later half of them had fallen off in the wash! But since I can't sew it was iron on labels or nothing. I then discovered that all the school items from Marks and Spencers have a bit on the label to write the childs name and class, so that was what I did this year.

Marialuisa where are you that it's freezing?

My dd went back to school on her first day with her pinafore, blouse, tie etc but since then she's worn her summer dress a lovely blue gingham one. It's getting colder here now though so she'll soon be wearing her pinafore again and then she'll be into her trousers.

I got shoe labels from start rite. Managed to repel the smell of ds1s feet so thats ok.

I'm on the Wirral, we've had the heating on in the evenings and mornings for about a week now. I wonder if we're a family of southern softies though as the kids next door have been playing out in shorts and vest tops. Dh called me to see in absolute amazement. Off to suunny Mallorca in Saturday, thank goodness! Seriously though, summer uniform until after half-term, it's just not right!

bells2 · 02/09/2003 21:23

Hadn't seen that Twink - thanks and would definitely be iterested in your review.

Marialuisa, I'm in Scotland and it's been getting chilly in the evenings and mornings here as well. Had the heating on for about half an hour last night at dinner time just to heat the house up and I'm planning to put it on in the mornings for an hour as well as when we got up this morning it was freezing.
It's ok during the day though just first thing and later on I feel it cold, but then I've always felt the cold. thank heavens for central heating is all I can say.

Sorry to have hijacked the thread by the way and I didn't know that you could get name tags for shoes. I just write dd's name inside her gym shoes don't put her name in her normal school shoes though.

Laudry markers here - life is too short to be sewing in labels - but not too short to be making nice PE bags.
