Ideal Place to live in the UK ?

My DH suggested I ask MNetter's this. We would like to relocate & can't decide where to go.

Looking for a village environment, good schools in walking distance, not too many cars, somewhere to buy the papers & loaf of bread & milk. A post office, playground, park & somewhere nice to walk. Prefer to be by the sea.

Would also need some sort of computer industry nearby for work.

Does something similar exist ? We have a few of these things, but the road near us is busy & I'm fed up with getting bits of grit in my eye when I walk to the toddler group !

UMMM yes exactly where i live (emsworth!) hants west sussex border by the sea....

IBM north ahrbour is about 10 mins drive away and employes THOUSANDS of people including my father and loads of people who all live around here...

its a gorgouse fishing village, and right by the sea....

i personally am a 10 min walk from being on the beach and less than a 10 min drive from being in the middle of no where... perfect for country walks!

I LOVE it here, and so do most people i know!

What about somewhere like North Berwick or one of the surrounding villages. Not too far from Edinburgh and I think it would have all the things you want. It's quite expensive but if you're moving up from the South of England you'd be okay.

Mojomummy · 25/09/2005 21:50

thanks.

Hadn't considered moving that north - I will have a look though & it sounds very pretty

Used to leave in Hill Head, so know where Emsworth is - is there a lake or pond in the village ?

Got to persuade DH to change jobs now..

Was going to suggest the east coast of Scotland too. East Neuk of Fife is lovely but not sure about jobs, would depend whereabouts you go and how you would feel about commuting.

NannyL · 25/09/2005 22:12

Yes there IS a pond in the village (2 actually)... the mill pond full of ducks and swans!

most places within a 5 mile radius around ehre are very nice too!

hatstand · 25/09/2005 22:25

oxfordshire or berkshire - full of places like that, all near Oxford, Reading, Swindon

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:27

Dover. So you can quickly jump on the ferry to France .

tamum · 25/09/2005 22:28

Another vote for East Coast near Edinburgh- have a look at Gullane or Aberlady maybe.

we live in Reading and we love it here... town.. countryside... no sea though...
mind you having said that... we were just saying the other night how nice it is round here when we suddenly had the roar of the police helicopter overhead... lovely.... it was so low we couldn't hear the tv.....

expatinscotland · 25/09/2005 22:31

How come no one's mentioned London?

Passionflower · 25/09/2005 22:48

Not quite UK, but we both adore being in Guernsey. I'm local DH isn't. Loads of sea, beach all summer, state schools are pretty good. 20% flat rate tax. Finance industry with voracious consumption of computer support. Nowhere further than 20 mins by car. Whole island has village mentality. Only downside cost of travel to mainland and cost of housing.

Skribble · 25/09/2005 22:48

Anywhere in Scotland, the central belt has loads of computer busineses. I prefer the West Coast but you could go just north of Central for loads of great places. Where roughly in GB were you thinking of?

eidsvold · 26/09/2005 00:14

we lived here for over a year prior to emigrating to Aus - fab....

walked to a number of fab oubs for lunch or a drink, walk to the local shop for papers, playground in middle of village, walk to Danbury lakes park - great huge ponds with lots of ducks to feed.

info here

Was going to suggest Stubbington, but as you've already lived in Hill Head ... ! Would go back to live in Stubb like a shot.

MrsSpoon · 26/09/2005 09:45

St Andrews is pretty pricey Kama. Although easy commute to Dundee.

Mojomummy · 26/09/2005 10:03

Hey Kando - whereabouts in Stubbington ? My secret fantasty is to live in Great Gays..or Little Gays, anywhere around there in fact.

We live in Berks cos of DH job & I've never really settled, being a bit of a village girl, used to slower pace of life etc etc. If we can find a compromise for both, that would be great.

Anything more specific in the Berks area ?

Will get the maps out tonight & check all these places out - thanks

where do you live at the moment Mojomummy??

mommie · 26/09/2005 15:51

i'll mention London! Wimbledon is great - for schools, common, pubs, shops. you have all the benefits of London and all the joys of open land. (richmond very close). But you do need money.

ediemay · 26/09/2005 16:17

Hi mojomummy,

Cardiff and some of the nearby villages are lovely - Llantwit Major, Dinas Powys etc.

sweetkitty · 26/09/2005 16:30

If I could afford it I would live in a little village called Strathaven in Lanarkshire near Glasgow but with a very villagey feel to it. Now if it had decent weather it would be perfect!

Fennel · 26/09/2005 16:31

we are thinking of Exeter. dp also works in computer industry, and there are some jobs there. not loads though. it has sea, villages, moors, ok schools. There are a lot of cars in Exeter but fewer in the villages around.
