Can I just say that I work for a small firm and we receive dozens of calls from companies trying to sell you things. My boss refuses to take these calls so I am always very polite and explain that I am very sorry but at the moment we are not interested in 'blah' product. I am NEVER rude these people as they are just doing a job, as am I. So why, with some, do they have the audacity to give it 'whatever' or slam the phone down !!!

Why is this bothering me today? Must be pregnancy hormones

Next time, just keep it to 'Sorry, we're not interested' and then put the phone down before you can hear their abuse.

dyzzidi · 21/09/2005 16:02

They bother me too we must get six a day regarding our phone systems and i tell them we own a telecoms company so do not need them. With the delay on the line as most of them are calling from abroad and the foreign accents this takes about ten minutes each call.

Oh and why are they all called John Smith!

chloe55 · 21/09/2005 16:03

Oh I know expat, I just feel so rude doing that because they must get it all the time. I guess they become hardened to it though.

Well if they're hardened enough to start giving you abuse for politely declining, I don't see where it's rude to say, 'Sorry, not interested,' and move on.

chloe55 · 21/09/2005 16:11

Yeah that's true, you know what - sod 'em, next one to ring I will do just that!!

scotlou · 21/09/2005 16:49

I just say - "Sorry we are not interested. Thank you for your call" and put the phone down.

anorak · 21/09/2005 17:03

I hate it too chloe. If you don't want to buy their product they talk to you as if you must be mad. OOoooh it winds me up something chronic.

Register your phone lines(s) with these description .
That shold stop the calls, if any get throguh tell them your registered with TPS and could you have their company number os you can report them...I find that stops them!!!

nightowl · 22/09/2005 01:58

i had a great one at home the other day (have a block but sometimes they still get through). woman phoned up, wittered on for 5 mins then asked me if i had a bt line. (i dont and when i tell them that it usually gets rid of them). i said i didnt, she said "ok just a minute"..me thinking she was going to try and flog me something, out of politeness i hung on ready to tell her "NO". she kept me waiting for about a minute while she tapped on her keyboard and then hung up on me. cheeky cow.

eidsvold · 22/09/2005 04:56

I had the Aus equivalent of BT call twice in one week to try and seduce me back to them - and despite being very firm with the first caller and telling them there was no way I would ever return to their phone company - I had one call at 9.50 PM!! I got concerned when the phone rang wondering what had happened to someone for the call to be that late... no one calling just someone wanting to get me to come back to their service. Figured they would make a note next to our number not to call but no...

I also had a knock at the door - guy in the area (from the UK no less - ) trying to get me to change my phone company - problem was - I was already with them !!! Again - does no one keep records. I did stop him before he went into his spiel. Strangely they must use backpackers to do the door to door studd - the first one to call was a northern lass, this time northern lad!!AGHHHHHHHHHH they're everywhere

Like everyone else has said - NO thank you, we are not interested and put the phone straight down.

FairyMum · 22/09/2005 06:56

"I am not ineterested. Thank you" then put phone down.

triceratops · 22/09/2005 08:09

It may be worth adding "Please remove us from your mailing list". I used to write software for telesales companies and there is usually a box they can tick. They won't tick the box unless you tell them to.

ThePrisoner · 22/09/2005 23:20

It's much more fun to get them to hang up on you ... once they've checked who you are and introduced themselves, all you do it blabber on ... and don't stop to draw breath -

"oh, I'm soooo glad you've rung ... not many people call me now ... I don't have many friends, in fact - I don't have any friends at all ... can't tell you how this makes me feel ... will you be my friend? ... please say yes, oh please say yes ... I get soooo lonely, all by myself, I can't get out much, I'm so happy that now I've got a friend ... you will be my friend won't you ... thankyou for ringing me, I'm just so happy, I can't tell you ... thankyou thankyou thankyou ... I hate being indoors by myself with no-one to talk to ..."

Believe me, your caller will be the one to hang up!

colditz · 22/09/2005 23:28

I used to be a cold caller and was awful at it. I got sacked after spending 45 minutes on the phone to a wavering-voiced old lady, who told me it was the first phonecall she had received in 2 weeks, and she was so hoping it was her son, but she was very happy to talk to me as well, and I sounded like a lovely young lady........

My next job was elderly care....

Absolutely true, that.

hunkermunker · 22/09/2005 23:30

Colditz, awww!

colditz · 22/09/2005 23:34

still in elderly care now, that old lady made me cry, honestly. It's a good job I got sacked because the guilt of selling Staybrite Windows to Adorable Grandmothers (tm) racked me with guilt.

colditz · 22/09/2005 23:34

It's late, i am aware that last post made bugger all sense

cinderelly · 23/09/2005 00:26

aww, colditz that is so sad! Reckon that'll probably be me in 50yrs time. hope I get someone like u looking after me, not many like u around.

myturn · 23/09/2005 00:30

Chloe, I get a minimum of 20 calls a day from salespeople (we are a small firm too). I started off being terribly nice and spending 10 minutes every call explaining why we didn't want to buy whatever it was they were trying to sell. Now I just say 'No we are not interested. Thank for calling. Bye.' and immediately put the phone down before they have started their speil. No need to be nasty, but to keep them hanging on is wasting their time and yours.
