Anyone been on a 'booze cruise'?

As some of you may know, I am getting married in December and we want to go to France to get some decent wine and champagne for the wedding. Has anyone been? I think we'll go to Cherbourg (or dp will, I am bowing out of this one).

So, can anyone recommend anywhere in Cherbourg and can you really save money by going to France to get wine??

Yes! You can save a LOT of money! The difference in duty alone is stupendous, apart from the fact that the actual wine is also cheaper. If you are having the reception somewhere other than at home, double check what corkage they charge (if any) on self-supplied booze though, as you'll have to factor that in.
My dh generally goes to Calais so can't recommend anywhere in Cherbourg I'm afraid. A tip, though, is to take over a bit of "evidence" that you are buying for a wedding if you are buying masses of wine - eg a copy of the invitation - if you are buying for eg 150 guests, they may give your dp a little bit of hassle to show that that number of cases of wine is really for his personal consumption.

Yes, decent champagne is half-price in France Enid and so are the good wines. Don't know the shops in Cherbourg but they probably have a branch of Auchan like most Channel ports.

We go to Oddbins in Cite L'Europe at Calais, don't know about Cherbourg sorry

cherbourg is, generally speaking, a bit of a dump (not its fault, it was flattened in the war). unless there is any specific reason why you are fixed on cherbourg, calais may be a better bet for nicer places to shop...

Cos Poole/Cherbourg is nearer us than Dover/Calais.

I think we'll place an advance order with French Majestic - they have fantastic champagne at half the price it is here...
