It's that time of year again and a note has come home from school to say they will be collecting shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.
However they haven't sent out the actual soliciting email and I thought I would just drop a quick email to the headmistress to see if they would consider a different charity that didn't use the shoeboxes as a tool to evangelise and as a reward for converting non-christians.
There have been lots of threads on MN in the past about how dodgy this organisation is and providing other alternatives. I've found several, including the Rotary CLub, Aquabox, and lots of things listed on the Humanist website.
However, one post I remember mentioned another charity that instead of collecting shoeboxes, classes collected a schoolbag of things (pens, pencils, cheap uniform, soap, all sorts of stuff!) to help children go to school when they might otherwise find it really difficult to go. I've searched and searched but can't find the charity so thought I'd see if any MNetters could remember what it was or if they knew of it - or any other charities that do similar sorts of things so I can send them to the headmistress.
Many thanks for your help!
