Can I get a new car tax disc if my MOT is due to run out in a week?

I reckon if it's valid on the day you go in to renew your tax they'll accept it and assume you'll renew on the day. There's nothing to stop you renewing your MOT a few days/weeks early though. 2 years in a row I didn't know my MOT had run out and therefore drove for AGES without one. So now I've aligned it with my tax so they both run out at the same time and I remember to do both at once.

Yes I think they will ask for a new MOT. I tried to buy my r/tax early to avoid the MOT and the PO woman was a bloody superior pita to me I even rang up to complain and they said she was right!! I hate bureaucrats btw.

MOT has to be valid for the first day that the tax disc covers. So if your MOT is due on 20th, you will not be able to renew your tax until you have a certificate which covers 1st October.

You can renew your MOT up to a month early and provided you have the existing certificate, the expiry date will be extended.

Always worth trying to get your car tax if you happen to be near an appropriate post office - they might not notice
