Moving to the Taunton area

Dp and I are relocating to the South West as I have fallen in love with Bristol and there is plenty of work for him down there.

He has been for an interview with an agency today and he has been told that there are two jobs he could walk in to. One of which was in Taunton. Not too far from Bristol when we want the shops, theatres at the weekend and a tad closer to Devon/ Cornwall and the coast which we love. Have looked at property online and we seem to be getting more for our money which is also good as is the fact that we are not far from Exeter as the Uni would be good for me.

But neither of us know Taunton. What is it like? Any surrouding areas you would recomend. What are the schools like? AS regular church goers we would wish to send dd to a Catholic primary.

I know it isn't going to have what lonodn has to offer but as I said Bristol isn't too far away which has plenty of culture and if there isn't much on our doorstep we won't feel so depressed about not being able to afford it.

Hvae just been looking through archive threads andyou moved to Somerset from London. Are you in a village? How long did it take you to get used to a new way of life. I know dp would love us to live near the coast or in the middle of nowhere - just not sure I could do it.

Wells! Even me with my champagne lifestyle on an ale budget knows that is out of the question.!

Taunton is a fantastic place and if I had my way I would move there tomorrow. We are in North Devon and I am blessed that I have the chance to live in a beautiful area very close to the beach, but Taunton is my escape back to reality!

My closest friend lives in Taunton so I can ask her about schools etc for you.

Wellington is a pretty place to live and easy access to the M5.

Good Luck with the house move.

Taunton is ok - bil lives near there. Personally, I prefer a lot of the villages and some of the other south Bristol towns more. It depends what you are after - a basic ok town with the usual high street shops and a reasonable bank of schools or pretty then Taunton might fit the bill., Rural villages with more of a sense of community (but a little hit and miss on the school front unless you are careful), carry on looking around and about.
Where was the other job located?

Wells isn?t too bad pricewise if you know where to look and look at villages just outside. We almost bought a house there ten years ago on a very modest budget, and then bought one just outside Wookey instead and lived there for a couple of years - loved it. Was worth the country lanes and putting up with tourist season. Loads to do and see, full of character, great walks...aaah, why did we move???

Agree about Wellington, very special little place - but I think it is rather pricey - poss. more so than Wells (but haven?t looked at house prices south of Bristol for a while now )

I understand beetroot, I would probably live in a city if it were only me but dp is a real countryside person and dd is taking after her. as long as there is city life not too far away I will be fine.

The job is in Taunton, he has been told the interview will be in a few weeks, we will all go down together and have a scout around.

All seems very stressful at the moment trying to finish a few jobs here so we can get this house on the market, hopefully we will sell ours quite quickly as we are in a popular area for families. We have only been here a year and we viewed it before it was fully advertised and we were in a bidding war with two other couples, hopefully it will still be a popular house! Dreading that dp will have to move away first and rent somewhere tiny while we sell this, would be lost without him.

THanks for that Jayzmummy, much appreciated.

Basketcase I am hoping for somewhere with a strong sense of community, I am quite active in our local parish and community and would hope to do the same when we move so I can make friends and settle. Will check out surrounding areas.
