Thanks for your replies. I don't get the gist of it at all. I talk to him, he talks to me, I tell him what a S* H is, and then it's over.

Didn't you find any of it helpful at all? If it didn't click for you, or if you don't think you're going to get anything out of seeing this particular chap, then you can ask to be referred to someone else. Not all psychiatrists suit all patients - someone else with a different approach might be better for you.

Oh, that sounds a bit disappointing if you want to change your life...

It takes time. The first few times you go will just be for him to get to know you and learn some background stuff about you. Give it time.

I think - or at least it seems - I'm lucky to have him. The option was a CPN.

There's always an alternative. There are different types of therapies, different sorts of approaches, and I'm pretty sure this guy won't be the only psychiatrist on the block.

But as Anorak says, it can take time and it's worth sticking with ... you are going to go again, aren't you?
