One-child families depicted in TV programmes and films

Prompted by a recent thread about the Large Family (elephants withh no access to family planning as seen on CBEEBIES) and as a follow up to the thread about the depiction of one-child families in books, I was wondering if anyone had any positive role models for onlies in the above media.

I can think of Pocoyo, and, for the French among us, Petit Ours Brun and Trotro.

Is Noddy an only child (although I take the point that that is a TV adaptation of a book)?

Racingsnake · 08/03/2009 23:16

And of course the Little Princess. Although the same thing applies.

Although in later books, the Little Princess now has a new baby brother...

Racingsnake · 09/03/2009 17:30

Hmm, that is what tends to happen!

The fruits of my Googling -

Here is a discussion about only child syndrome and other TV tropes and here is a discussion about only children in Disney

and is Tommy Zoom an only child?

squeaver · 09/03/2009 19:02

No Tommy Zoom has a baby sibling (iirc )

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 09/03/2009 19:05

Oh, thank you Squeaver. It's a while since we graduated to CBBC (now abandoned in favour of Top Gear re-runs on Dave )and so I wasn't sure.

noddyholder · 09/03/2009 19:09

Ronnie corbett in sorry I can see that being us in a few years

verylapsedrunner · 09/03/2009 19:10

MadBad - sounds like DS. He's only 6 but prefers Top Gear on Dave to CBBC

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 09/03/2009 19:16

Ronnie Corbett in Sorry? Racingsnake was asking for positive role models, not hideous caricatures to confirm your worst fears!

pointydog · 09/03/2009 19:19

there's lots. There was a threa don this not so long ago - not sure how easily traceable it is

noddyholder · 09/03/2009 19:23

Dp has just said steptoe and he's a single parent too!Guess we are on teh wrong track

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 09/03/2009 20:54

Ah now, I feel a great affection for Steptoe the Younger.

barley2 · 09/03/2009 21:33

Glad I'm not the only one in deep thought on this one- been consoled by Postman Pat's son Julian, still an only last time I looked.

daisy99divine · 10/03/2009 00:22

Yeah, Postman Pat's son is an only and I think his boffin mate is an only too....in fact most of the kids in postman pat are onlies, iirc!

Kipper is an only. But then he's a dog. Perhaps not quite the role model

Spot is an only too

Adam's son in Spooks is an only. And an orphan with a lush dad. oh sorry. with a lush dad no more

What about Alex, Sam's son in ER? Ok, he's had some troubles, but he's an only

As is Sarah, Gates's adopted daughter.

Ummm, of course George Clooney blew it by having twins

daisy99divine · 10/03/2009 00:23

Eloise who lived in the Plaza!

An only. A book first, but nonetheless....

FlorenceofArabia · 10/03/2009 22:26

Tracy Barlow in Coronation Street ... but she turned psycho and murdered her DP

Oh dear, we're not doing very well at this are we?

squeaver · 10/03/2009 22:45

But what about Peter Barlow? I know he's her step-brother but still..

Never mind Tracy, it's mute-child Amy that I fear for.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 10/03/2009 22:47

Coronation Street?

FlorenceofArabia · 10/03/2009 23:04

Peter is Tracy's step-brother (and a bigamist!) but he wasn't around when she was growing up ... so she was an only child.

DH has just suggested Harry Enfield's character Kevin ...

daisy99divine · 10/03/2009 23:09

I am pretty confident that Florence in the Magic Roundabout is an only child (now why would I be thinking of Florence love you name btw)

And, (wresting this discussion away from soaps) what about Roland on Grange Hill? And his little friend who called him ROW-Land - she was an only?

And Tucker?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 11/03/2009 13:20

Hmm. I'm still not sure that the lovely, hormonally-crazed Kevin is a positive role model!

I'm just wondering about Andy Pandy. Has the relationship between him and Looby Loo ever been explained or defined?

juneybean · 07/04/2009 15:07

Ralph Wiggum on the Simpsons ? lol

daisy99divine · 07/04/2009 16:37

Florence in Magic Roundabout always on his own?

And isn't Charlie & Lola's friend an only? And Marvin?
