What advice or tip would you give to other one child families?

Practical: The cost of a 'family' ticket (2 adults + 2 children) to many attractions is often the same as tickets for 2 + 1. So it costs nothing for your child to invite a friend, and they gain some same-age company for the day.

Idealistic: Accentuate the positive.

Ohhh , thanks for that idea, hadn;t realise that . Boy is not of an age that we invite many of his friends with out their parental translation and transport service.

My contribution.
Have ready bed will travel. no need for a family room on weekends away, just a double and the ready bed. With 1 preschooler it's easy to say- "oh they are a bit too tall for a travel cot, but we have a blow up bed that fits in the same space".

UniS - Yes, my tip is really for once you get to the paying for a child's ticket stage (generally 6+ around here)!

Great idea about the ready bed.

In terms of the ready bed, we've got one but not used it yet - what we've done up to now is taken the cot mattress with us - whilst ds much too big for the cot, the mattress is fine and its more like a proper bed to sleep in than an air bed - bolstered with cushions on one side and placed against a wall on the other it has proven to be a easy, practical and well-slept in version that doesn't need to be blown up when you arrive....

Will definitely be looking out for the family ticket prices when its relevant - I'll have to wait until we have a little bit less wriggling first!

Ah, we do the shove him in the middle of the double bed and it works for us - most exciting night of our whole trip was the night in the Holiday Inn on route! (for DaisyBoy, not necessarily us!)

We wouldn't have any sleep doing that! It was bad enough sharing a family room with him - he eventually dropped off at 10.30, only to wake up demanding breakfast at 5.30 with not a hope for anything until 7.00!

DD and I have one twin bed, DH the other. Not romantic but cheap!

As you say, accentuate the positive. Lots of things you can do much more easily with one toddler, esp travelling. Mum with pushchair and toddler things and food and good book for when toddler speeps, DH with huge bag and all the responsibility.

Cultivate close friends for offspring. Sunday lunch etc with other family.

Definitely - however, thought it might be a good tip to put in! He woke up hungry as he'd managed to bring up all of his supper in the service station (thoughtfully caught in empty soup bowl by yours truly ()) - I think it was the travelling as he is not great in the car really. This year we're not going as far so hope it won't be so bad!

buy a one child cycle trailer- the two child ones are stupid heavy and too wide for most doorways.
