Nursery that does trips out every day

Does anyone have experience of nurseries that do this? I'm thinking of sending DS (who's nearly 2) to a small nursery. They don't have a garden, so instead take the kids out twice every day. Mostly it's just to the park and libray, but they also have a little minibus that takes them to a country park further away.

He hasn't started yet, we only saw it today but coincidentally saw the kids from the nursery at the library this afternoon. Now I may be being paranoid, but I didn't really think they were keeping THAT close an eye on them.

What would happen if one wandered off? Please tell me I'm being stupid and the kids love these trips out!

Nurseries should have gardens/outdoor areas. They should be allowed out whenever they want. I would never contemplate working in a nursery with no garden and I would advise people not to send their children to one.

is it a preschool?

I think it's great they take them on trips out

I wouldn't contemplate sending my DS to a nursery without adequate outdoor space of its own. Sounds like a workaround.

I specifically sent my two to a nursery which didn't do trips out (they got criticsed by Ofsted for not doing so!!!) for the same concerns you have. I don't think it's being over cautious. With the best will in the world a large group of under 4's is almost impossible to keep an eye on no matter how consientious the supervision and accidents happen so easily. However it did have a big garden so lots of playing out and picnics in good weather and a paved playground for wet whther and palying on trikes.

Thanks so much for all your responses. You've all really just confirmed what I thought. I agree, GoldenTomato, there is no way you can keep an eye on everyone and at the library the kids just scattered. I just don't think I'd be able to concentrate at work, worrying about where they were/what was happening.

Trips are great, but think at two he's just to little to understand all the rules they had about not running off, playing just as far as the trees etc.

I work in a nursery and we occassionally do trips to the library and park BUT I prefer not to - the worry is too much! We have a big garden so use that every day.
