Going to look at a nursery for dd later....

and I feel sick thinking about it.

I just don't know if I'll be able to leave her

Oh, elsmommy, it must be difficult. I didn't leave ds till he was three, but he was definitely ready and I was satisfied that the nursery was OK and he settled in OK.

Just visit the nursery and see what you think and if you feel that dd will be happy there.

Are you worried about something happening to her while she's there?

Elsmommy my DD was at the most wonderful nursery from age 1 till she went to school. She dearly loves the teachers there, and even now (she's nearly 6) goes back to see them occasionally. We often run into them in the street and they always recognise her and greet her with hugs and kisses. If I showed you the thank you note I wrote to them on the day she left you would probably be in tears - they all were and so was I. She still has some good friends from nursery, who went to different schools, but they all still insist on seeing each other for play days. Nursery was the making of my DD, and I really hope you will find the same sort of loving, caring environment for yours. These places do exist!

Its just shes really clingy and I haven't been away from her at all in about 6 months.
She will probably love it, she likes been with other kids.

I keep thinking she won't have their full attention and they might not notice if she needs her nappy changing...or if she wants a snack...or if she bumps her head!!

I'm being silly

this kind of anxiety is perfectly natural, i felt it the first time i left our girls with dh! but if you find a good nursery (or other form of childcare, whatever your preference) then I'm sure she'll be fine and you'll both get a lot out of this. i'm a big supporter of nurseries (my girls both went 3 days a week @ 8 months - now they are 5 and 2) and think the benefits are worth that initial anxiety that we all feel

you're not being silly at all. Of course no-one is going to look after her as well as her mum, but try to think of the advantages for her of going - making new friends and doing different activities and giving her the chance to be more independent.

I was exactly like you, but after sending ds to nursery I realised that he needed to know how to be in places without me. He was also very clingy.

If it's a good nursery I think you might be surprised at how quickly she'll settle in.

and tell them about your feelings, and they will - if it's a good nursery - support you both through the transition period

We went and had a look round the nursery.
It was really nice and the manager was lovely, she explained everything and was really supportive about my concerns.

Dd of course ran off to play with the kids and found the biggest slide to go down!!!
Didn't even turn round to make sure I was still there

aww elsmommy, dont worry about the nursery nurses not noticing your daughters needs. They have eyes in the back of their heads and do regular 1/2 hr nappy checks and most offer juice and snacks throughout the day. I really hope she settles there if you choose that is the nursery to suit both your needs.

When my ds started nursery all sorts of horrible images used to run through my mind. I would regularly turn up unexpectedly and peer in the window - mad mom but think they are used to it! Now my son is 2 and a half and he sometimes asks me if he can go to nursery when we spend days together. I think you have to keep a very close eye on things but let ur child be the guide, if they're happy then u will be too. Good luck!

Oh i so know how you feel! I have just been offered a job, only one day a week, and dd will have to go to nursery, and i already feel sick with worry! I haven't found a place yet, or checked any out, and i will be back on here after my hols to pick peoples brains on how to prepare her (and me!) for the experience!
