How do nursery waiting lists work?

Stupid question here, as I'm not sure how waiting lists work in practice.

The nursery I'm interested in has a 3 month or so waiting list but I don't actually want my daughter to start for 5 months. What happens when a place comes up? Do I have to start paying fees from when a place comes up or do they arrange it so a place is not allocated to when I actually need one?

Thanks

Ask the nursery. They all have their own rules in my experience.

If you are offered a place and you don't take it, then at our nursery we will offer it to someone else.
You will then have to wait for another place.
