So we've finally solved our September trauma (hooray) and found very nice little private day nursery for dd3. The fees seem to be pretty average I guess and everything else good, but they are charging us a £250 deposit, paid back when she leaves. Is this usual?

Sounds very normal and to be expected.

We have to pay a deposit of one month's fees (in addition to paying fees in advance at the start of the month), again to be paid back on leaving. I think it's entirely usual.

yes it is normal - its to reserve the place, so that they know you will actually turn up in september.

Ok, thank you! I guessed it was - but sent the eldest two to state nurseries so hadn't come across it before.
