ds started nursery and not eating there..please help

Hi,

My ds is 11 months old and he has started nursery two days a week from yesterday.He had a week of settling in period but that varied between few hours to half a day. Yesterday was his first full day and when i went to pick him in evening, his key worker told me that he has not eaten much. He ate few teaspoons in breakfast, some lunch and most of his tea. And as for milk he has taken only 2 and 4 oz compared to 7 ouces he takes in one feed.I am feeling very worried that what if he doesnt get better.

Is it natural for children to be like this in the begining.

At home also i have to struggle to feed him and sometimesit takes me 40-60 min to get lunch or dinner into him.

Should i talk to nursery staff and ask them to give more time into feeding him or stay quite.

I wouldn't worry just yet. Give him a bit of time to settle and then see if there is still a problem.

smerchant very few babies/childrenm voluntarily starve themselves, don't worry.
He is just probably too busy taking in all the new sights,sounds and experiences to bother eating As long as he gets a good feed with you morning & night then the rest is fine- he may be a natural "grazer" and prefer small frequent meals-which is after all healthier they say! They only have little tummies.

His keyworker has told you honestly what he had so that's good she isn't hiding anything.

Give him time he'll be fine I'm sure!!

My 11 month old has recently "given up" all milk feeds in the day - has a big b/feed early morning and 8oz formula at bedtime. Some babies do cut down on the milk around this age.

My dd is very "busy" at nursery! I do think it takes them a good few weeks to settle into their new routines.

If he seems to enjoy his tea the most (you said he ate most of it) maybe focus on that. Perhaps the nursery would allow you to supplement it (e.g. take in a rice pudding or yogurt or something) if the nursery is only providing a snacky type tea (which ours does). Some of the children at dd's nursery (especially if they stay til 6pm) have a little bit of extra tea. Ask the staff if you think this might work.

Mine hardly ate when he first started, now I swear he eats things there he wouldn't touch at home! Apart from the other week when he went on sandwich strike.....cue mummy having to arse about making pasta salad for him

dd wouldn't eat at nursery to start with (at 9 mths) but that is now where she eats best! Her book always some home with "ate all" after each meal whereas at home she is being really picky

My DS hardly ate anything before he started nursery at 11mo, he now eats full meals there (still often not so good with me though, think the smell of milk puts him off...)

It did take him a while to get to this stage though, for a good few weeks he would only eat the snacks that I provided in his little bag. I think its pretty normal, I wouldn't worry about it.

I think that it will be a good thing for your ds to see other babies eating. If they all sit around together then the focus won't be on him like it is at home and hopefully, he'll start to just get on with it I always tell myself that babies don't starve themselves and all we can do is present the food to them in a nice place to eat it. The rest is (sometimes frustratingly) up to them. So easy to hand out advice! Good luck

Bossybritches will vouch for me stressing over exactly the same thing this week. My dd began ft on Monday after some settling-in sessions. Was refusing all solids and drinking v little milk compared to normal - along with crying everytime she saw/was held by someone who wasn't me! Have just picked her up today to be told she stuffed her face with porridge, chicken hotpot, and lots of milk - I am living proof it does get better

thanks for all your replies. I picked him up today and he seems to be better. He took his two bottles 7 ouncs each and ate half of his lunch and most of his tea. Breakfast is still not much but i think he is getting used to it. Also he is eating snacks like breadsticks, banana etc so i feel much better.
