Funded hours are baffling

My daughter turns one at the end of April and starts nursery at the beginning of May. Am I right in thinking that because I’m already technically back at work (taking my accrued AL) she’ll get funding from day 1? Or does she not get it until September because of the term starting then? It’s so confusing!

Have you applied and got your code or is it still to early for this?

DownmarketSellingSunset · 04/03/2026 20:33

We’ve just applied

It's the term after they turn 9 months, so she should be funded straight away

I've been looking into this loads for me (a year in advance that's how confused I was!) and I think

  • she turned 9 months in Jan, therefore you're entitled to April funding
  • annual leave counts as being back
-its before 30th April (cut off return to work) so you're entitled to April funding.

So yes, from day 1 ☺️

Send them your code as soon as you've got it

So long as you have got your funding code by 31st March, she will be eligible for funding from 1st April.
I would double check with the nursery how they apply it though.

As PP have said, make sure you have her code before 31st March and she will be able to get funding in May. If you are stretching it you will need to check the exact amount of hours she will get with them as it decreases if you start later in the year (stretched funded hours go from September-August so autumn and spring terms have already gone). It will revert to full allocation from September.
