Thinking about sending DS to 2 different nurseries

My DS (3 years old) has attended a private nursery since he was 1. He'll start school in September 2026. From September 2025 we're considering keeping him at his current nursery 2 days per week and sending him to the preschool of the school he'll most likely go to 2 days per week. Just wondered if anyone has done anything similar & if it worked ok?

Pros for doing this:

  • it'd only be 2 days to cover in school holidays, grandparents aren't able to help much and most holiday clubs only take 4+ year olds
  • it'd give DS chance to get to know other children at school & school setting before he starts school. He's quite shy so think this might help him with the transition to school

Cons:

  • would it be confusing/unsettling for him to go to 2 different nurseries with potentially different rules

If we don't do this, we'll keep him at the private nursery until he starts school as we have no way of covering all the school holidays if he went to preschool full time. We're happy with the private nursery, just unsure it'll prepare him for school as much as the preschool would.

Please let me know what you think

Lots of parents I know do this - usually a ‘formal’ nursery and then a forest school the other days.

Not heard of them having any issues with it.

Honestly I wouldn't bother. He will settle just as well when he starts school without the upheaval of moving to the school nursery.

Obviously I don’t know your son but 3 is generally old enough to understand and adapt to 2 different settings

Very common where I am in Australia for the year before starting school. Typically 2 days a week at kindy (pre school) which is very cheap, government run, school hours (or close to) and usually feeds into local school. Then any other days needed (plus school term holidays when kindy is shut) at private childcare centres (assume what is called nursery in the UK). We did this and it wasn't an issue at all.

My DD did this for my DGS . He was fine with it , he used to call them blue nursery and red nursery .
