Nappy rash - AIBU?

DH picked up DS (21m) from nursery today. On pick up, DH was told DS seemed upset for the last few hours of the day. When DH tried putting DS in car seat, DS screamed and seemed very unsettled. As soon as he came home, we checked his nappy and it was heavily soiled. DS also had a big bright red rash. Screamed when I cleaned him. Looking at the app, his nappy was last changed at 3.30pm and we picked him up 2hrs later. He had loose stool in the morning so my question is, AIBU for:

  1. expecting nursery told be more vigilant with dirty nappies if there was previous episode of loose stool that day?
  2. thinking it’s obvious to check a non-verbal toddler’s nappy if he is grumpy just in case? At least that’s what I do normally to rule out possible causes for grumpiness?

if IANBU, I’d like to raise it with nursery but not sure which route to take as I generally don’t have any issues with the staff and this is the first time it’s happened. Don’t want to upset anyone. TIA

Gosh this is a nightmare as a childminder. I mean clearly it didn't smell as your dh didn't notice either. I've got a little one who is the same, I check him constantly but occasionally get caught out when I change him and there is a surprise poo there. I always check him again before home time but I'd be upset if I ever missed it.

Why wasn't he sent home with a loose bowel movement in the morning?

Just to add, raise it factually.

Hello! Just so you know, ds had done a poo probably a while before home time as he was really sore, I'd imagine that was the reason for his grumpiness this afternoon. Clearly it didn't smell as dh didn't realise at first either but just wanted you to be aware. If possible could he be checked more frequently especially if he's grumpy as he does sometimes have a sneaky poo! Many thanks and have a great weekend.

@FrannyScraps thanks for your recommendation. I like the way you have worded. I will definitely raise it. I couldn’t even bath DS properly just now he was so sore. Need to see how this can be prevented next time.

he wasn’t sent home because he had x1 episode only. It’s only by the 3rd they’re sent home. It’s not the issue anyways, as DS is fine other than this rash.
