Hello,
FTM and my LO is due to start nursery in May and I am struggling to understand when to apply for the free childcare hours. I tried to have a look at the gov.uk website but I am not sure I understood .
He was born on 14/07/24. Will he be eligible in may since he will be 9m? When should I apply ? And will he be able to get 30hours with the new law?

TIA

He'll be 9 months in April surely?

From the government website
You can apply from when your child is 23 weeks old.
If your child turns 9 month old from 1 April to 31 August
*you can get your hours from Term starting on or after 1 September
Apply The term before 1 September (so April-July)

I can't see anything about getting 30 hours until they are older

Yes he'll get 30 hours from September. You'll have to pay until then. Apply for code around July time.

It's only 15 hours for 9mo atm and 30 from September.

If he turns 9 months in May you’ll get the funded hours from September, it’s always the term after they turn the qualifying age.

At the moment it’s 15 hours a week. From September it goes to 30 hours. The hours are term time only. So if he starts mid March it’ll be 2-3 weeks off at Easter, week of in May and then tends to be 7-8 weeks for the main summer hols. Nurseries tend
to charge fees for extras (mine is a flat fee to access the hours) and then for lunch / tea.
