Would you be happy with no DBS check?

Hi all,

I Iam a man.... Boo, but having worked at a children's nursery for over 17 years as a, well contractor to put it in a concise word but was more handyman, I have just been informed that I should have been given a DBS check all those years ago but no and did any other contractor. I have recently found out that as a self employed person you cannot carry out checks yourself and it is down to the company to do them. Just realised after not working for them for 3 years or more that if anyone put a complaint in against me then I could be locked up until my past was investigated, Ps I am clean. My real question here is how can a highly rated nursery, don't OFSTED check? My daughter was in the same nursery and to be brutally honest 20 years ago I am not even sure it was a thing. Just to let you all know I have emailed the nursery in question stating the above, what do you think my next port of call should be?

Regards

Marl

You wouldn't be locked up, for the Nursery not having done the DBS check.

As an aside, DBS didn't come in until 2012, so whoever told you that isn't in full awareness of the facts.

Boo 👻 or as in boo hiss? You can pay for your own dbs if you’re self employed.

I worked in a school. We had to pay for our own and claim it back on expenses - about £20 so yea you should pay for your own - but the nursery should have asked you for a copy, however I doubt you were left alone with the children.

You don't need one technically unless you are directly working with and have sole care of the children. If you are in a support role it may not be required by Ofsted although the nursery policy may differ. They could run the check and charge you the fee,
