School Nursery Place

When do I need to put my son, who is 2 in November, on a waiting list for a school nursery place?
The school we want him in ideally, is the same school his older sister attends. Shes 7 in December and is going into Year 2 in September.

The school will have the kids starting the term after their 3rd birthday which for our son would be January 2025. Would now be a better time to put him on that waiting list?

TIA

Have you asked the school what the process is for it? I think they may all do it differently.

Hi my son would also be starting Jan 2025, I went in two weeks ago to put him on the waiting list. I was told it’s best to go as early as possible to get them on so I would advise doing the same. It was a simple form to fill out so you may aswell get it done.

Just to add, she said the reason it’s best to get on the waiting as early as possible isn’t always down to spaces, but to get the hours you want. For example we want 5 morning sessions a week which are usually the first to fill up so now we’re on the waiting list early we will be prioritised for that.

There's not a universal application process for nurseries, best to contact them directly and ask.

Check the school's website and see when their open days are. I think it's too early if your child isn't 2 yet but worth checking.

Hi, Thank you for the quick responses. I will drop an email into school. I just wasn't sure if it was too early to ask the school themselves. When I collect his sister later today, I will ask for a form also.

Thank you for your help :)

Oooh it depends on the school, some you might need to put their name on from birth to get a place. I would do it asap

I used to be the teacher in a school Nursery Class. We had criteria for admission but getting the child's name down early wasn't one of them. It depended on a) school catchment b) siblings in school c) other reasons e.g. SEN.
