Finding a nursery in Glasgow

Hi there

I've got a bit of a complicated story, but will try to make it short! Currently I live in South Lanarkshire with my 20 month old DS and partner. I commute into Glasgow, DS goes to nursery here 1.5 days a week and my partner looks after him the rest of the time. I'm due to start a new job (with a substantial pay hike) about 15 mins away in March. However, my partner and I are getting seperated (all very amicable, just the practicalities that are proving to be a nightmare!). I don't really like living round here, its too small and I really would prefer to be in Glasgow. Thing is, to afford a decent place, I'll need the salary of the new job. So in a nutshell, I need a nursery (or childminder) which does a slightly longer day than usual, just to ensure that I can get to pick up DS in time. I reckon a 7.30am to 6.30pm day would be perfect. The other spanner in the works, is that DP and I are going to share care, so that one week he'll be with me and one week with his dad, who'll be moving to England. (Told you it was complicated!). Our current nursery does a variable contract where you pay a bit more per day but can have an irregular contract. But I've no idea if that's standard. So what I need is a nursery in Glasgow (or somewhere between Glasgow and South Lanarkshire that I could go to on the way to work) that does a longer day than usual and will do a week on and a week off. Not after much hey?!

If anyone has any advice at all I'd be ever so grateful. It all seems so mind boggling at the minute and I'm trying to find the best solution for us all.

Cheers in advance
bikedo

No advise really as it is complicated!! The bes thing I can suggest is ringing round a few and seeing what they offer.

There is a thread in the meet-up section called bumps and bairns north of the border if you would like to pop in and say hello, there are quite a few of us who have babies varying between a few weeks and 2 years. We have quite a few meet-ups for coffee and such like and are a friendl bunch. I'm in Uddingston btw.

I know there is Weeonion on our thread who is looking for something similiar to you as she lives in Glasgow but has to communte to Edinburgh. She has quite a few contacts for nurseries and childminders - will send her in your direction as I'm sure she will be able to help.

Thanks very much for the speedy reply. I think I do just need to start phoning places. I'll go find your meet-up thread, I've got friends through work but none of them have kids so will be really good to meet some other mums.

Many thanks again, and hopefully will come across you on the other thread!

here it is

I think there's one is the southside of glasgow called harlequin Gold that offer 24 hour care so you could try them, although you find a childminder more willing to be flexible. try Yell.com for their contact details as I could find a website to link you to.

midnightexpress · 21/01/2008 13:28

What rhumba said. I looked into harlequin when I was looking for ds1's place - we ended up not going there as it's a bit far from where we live but they seemed to offer all sorts of options. However, I think it's changed names recently - last time I drove past I'm sure it was called something different, can't remember what. Will let you know next time I go past. So anyway, not sure if it's still got 24hr care. BTW, when it was harlequin, one of my pals had her dd there and was v happy with it.

bikedo - just found this. if you try the southside branch of "working for families" - they might be able to help. i have had a nightmare with nurseries and childcare - still ongoing but to my knowledge - there is no nusery currently open that offers extended care. arghhh!

Hi Bikedo, am in south lanarkshire too. Have you tried contacting the Early years worker at the council-either South Lanarkshire or Glasgow? They have a list of childminders, nurseries etc and may know if any have extended hours. Sorry to hear about your break up. Hope everything is ok.
