Wondering if generally nurseries are open or closed for others

Ours closed early today , and said they will provide an update tomorrow early AM if opening.

Trying to get a view if most are opened or closed please , so I can atleast try and plan / mange my expectations! Of course I’ll try and plan on basis it is closed

The nursery that I work at was open all day until 6pm. We have the children outside in the morning but past 11 keep them in the shade/inside. We nearly closed though. We are a very small setting but have the Maximum amount of children per room so we are pretty full. 8 children in a toddler room with 3 staff members, a tiny window and no air con can be hotter than a house I think. All the body heat. I wouldn’t be surprised if it closed tomorrow.

My GDs nursery is open as usual…keeping blinds down…and children playing in shade on veranda not in the garden itself….had ice lollies this after noon and lots of water play

dandelionthistle · 18/07/2022 19:26

In London. Ours closed slightly early today at 2pm (usually finish at 3) and have said they'll finish at 12.30 tomorrow. They've been inside mainly playing with water today from what I can gather, and DD very excitedly reported being given juice twice which I guess was part of a bid to ensure they were all drinking 😅

It's an annoying disruption to work (and after the past couple of years I have such low tolerance for that), but I'm so grateful for how hard they've worked today to keep all the children safe and cheerful. I trust they wouldn't be closing if they didn't feel they had to.

kegofcoffee · 18/07/2022 20:01

Ours has stayed open throughout. They've planned a lot of water play inside, blinds down and lots of fans on.

That said I decided against sending my DC in, but if I wasn't self employed then I would have had no choice but to send them in.

It surprises me that nurseries haven't invested in AC, we brought a decent unit for £300. And surely they loose more than that if they close for a day.

Leggingslife · 18/07/2022 20:02

Open. They have air con so kept the children in all day which I am happy with.

trevthecat · 18/07/2022 20:04

We are north west so not in a red zone but still very hot today. Ours stayed open

Thursday37 · 18/07/2022 20:06

Open as usual, but they have air con in all rooms so pretty straightforward for them. They are staying inside though, they are usually very outdoorsy but have decided it’s too risky for heatstroke. They are doing indoor ice and water play and have a freezer full of lollies apparently.

riotlady · 18/07/2022 20:08

Ours is open, although we are in the NE so Amber rather than red. They played out this morning then kept them inside from 11- apparently they all loved their “foot spa” with ice cubes!

SquigglePigs · 18/07/2022 20:09

We're in the red warning area. DD's is open albeit we've shuffled work around so she's only in for the morning today and tomorrow. They've done really well today. Stayed inside, cold cloths to dip in water to cool themselves, face mist sprays, ice pops and cold food for lunch. The rooms were very warm though so we feel like we've got the balance right. Not everyone has that choice though and the nursery are doing everything they can to keep everyone safe and as comfortable as possible.

Styles24 · 18/07/2022 20:33

I got an email yesterday saying they will be closed today and tomorrow. Still having to pay nursery fees although they’re the ones who decided to close and I’ve lost out on double wages now👎

Hotdrysunny · 18/07/2022 20:34

Ours is open. I wish I could not send DCs in but have to unfortunately.

Overthebow · 18/07/2022 20:39

Our is open, but has air con. They stayed inside in the cool today and didn’t go outside.

ChickenRat · 18/07/2022 20:41

We've got a red warning for today and tomorrow, our nursery doesn't open on Mondays and will be closed tomorrow (predicted to be 39°c from 12pm)

CallMeBubbleDarling · 18/07/2022 20:45

ours closed at 1pm today. They warned us last week it was a possibility so we had quite a bit of warning. It’s a very hot building and forecast is 41 here tomorrow so I imagine they will close again at 1 before the top temperatures hit. Fees deducted from our bill though which our nursery is brilliant for. If they choose to close, we don’t have to pay.

KateRusby · 18/07/2022 20:45

Think we're just within the red warning area and it's open. I teach and honestly it was fine today - a little warm in the classroom but definitely did not need to be closed. Obviously it depends on your setting, type of building etc.

mynameiscalypso · 18/07/2022 20:45

London and ours was open today. They have a/c. I wish I was there! I was a bit surprised that they took the children out for a walk this morning but they only went to the local supermarket (also a/c) and went out first thing so we're back inside by 10.30.

MrsH497 · 18/07/2022 21:33

Ours opened but the toddler room had to close early as staff had to be sent home with heat exhaustion and the room temperature was 32 and climbing even with fans. It's an Edwardian building so no air conditioning. They did so well trying to keep it cool and to stay open but the safety of the staff and children is paramount.

Rattles1 · 18/07/2022 22:31

Thanks all ! Agree that the safety is the most important. Ours closed today as couldn’t keep temp down and some air con units hadn’t arrived on time. I doubt they have arrived by tomorrow so expecting to stay closed

Mine was open today. One staff member sent home after headaches and throwing up.
