Nursery nap routine - help

Hi everyone,

My 13 month old started his settling in days this week at nursery and although I did explain he's on two naps a day they don't seem to have taken much notice.

He's only done 2, 4 then 6 hours (6 hours today) but had a nap at home this morning. I told them this and said I doubt he would need a nap until later in the afternoon. Anyway, he woke up at 10:00 here after 30 mins and then they put him down at 12 and he slept for 40 mins. I picked him up at 4, got home and put him down for a nap otherwise he would be going to bed too early which means as he only does a solid 5/6 hours then has broken sleep, I really don't fancy starting my day at 3am!

He has awake times between his two naps and bed time of 4/4.5 hours, so it's well off today. When I go back to work he will be doing longer days 8-5) but I won't be home until 6/6:30 and worry if this is the routine at nursery I'm going to be buggered!

He's only in nursery 3 days a week and at my mums 2 days (where I can try and keep a better routine there as I'm also WFH)

I'm just so sleep deprived as it is, I could really do without the inconsistency. It's really worrying me. I also worry my LO is going to be absolutely exhausted and overtired causing more sleep issues!

Any advice?

That doesn't seem nearly enough sleep for a just turned one year old. Maybe he was tired?

Duracellbunnywannabe · 17/03/2022 17:23

I imagine when he starts nursery properly he will do be doing one nap as this is the norm for that age.

busyeatingbiscuits · 17/03/2022 17:24

Don't worry, he will settle in to the nursery routine with all the other children when he's doing full days and will probably just settle into doing one nap there.

Nursery routine probably have lunch early like 11.30ish then most of the over 1s will nap something like 12-2.30, so he will probably just need an early night on nursery days.

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat he's never been a consistently long napper. The sleep for me has been 🤪🤪 even though I've had a routine for a very long time!

@Duracellbunnywannabe it seems they do more than one nap for all of them atm. He's gone from 2 to now 3 again.

@busyeatingbiscuits yes, that's exactly what they do. The early bed times is what is worrying me as it means I won't see him plus, he's never been settled to bed by my partner as I've breast fed to sleep 😞.

I bet he’ll be fine. DD started nursery at just one doing two naps of about half an hour. She NEVER slept longer than 45 mins at home, and was always exhausted by her first nap mid morning.

By some voodoo, the nursery had her sleeping for 1.5hs every day after lunch within a week. She kept her usual schedule at home.

Honestly, nursery staff are like nap magicians. It will all be fine!

mummyof12021 · 17/03/2022 18:37

@MartinMartinMarti thank you!

Gosh, I know aren't they just? I mean, he's gone down with me ease every time with them. It's crazy!

I just want to at least have an hour with him before he goes to bed! I suppose as he gets older the bane of naps gets better, right and a routine will get better too?! X

He will probably start sleeping much better when he's not breastfed to sleep too, so a new routine can be a win all round.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 17/03/2022 18:54

At home is baby still in two naps? You can ask nursery to follow your routine but I found my little one settled into nursery routine quite quickly so in the two days he was at home I followed roughly their routine

DragonMovie · 17/03/2022 19:13

I’d adapt to the nursery’s routine. That’s what I did with DS. He slept much better for everyone after we did this because he learned from nursery.
Its way too hard for nurseries to enact a different map routine for every child. The whole reason nurseries have such impact on children’s sleep is that they all do the same thing at the same time.

mummyof12021 · 17/03/2022 19:15

@Whatelsecouldibecalled yes, he is. I suppose I've got to just see what happens! It's the anticipation more than anything! Z
