Is one nap at nursery the norm for a 12 month old?

My DS is almost 12 months and just starting settling sessions at nursery. Currently he has 2 naps still - morning and afternoon.

Nursery say they are adaptable to babies’ needs on naps, but in reality they try and get them all down together after lunch for one nap. They say that if my DS needs 2 they can accommodate that, but I can’t see how it will work - he’s not a great sleeper and I can’t see him sleeping while there’s lots of noise and stuff going on around him (it would be in the same room).

Is one nap the norm for 12 month olds at nursery? Do they make up the sleep deficit on non-nursery days? Or am I going to have a v tired and upset baby on my hands?

If you were in this situation, did you insist on 2 naps at nursery, or were you happy for your DC to fall in with they nursery’s routine?

There’ll be noise regardless- crying, talking, playing. They won’t all just go down to sleep quietly.

He may well surprise you and be able to nap surrounded by noise. My children did things at childcare that they’d never done at home.

Sorry- to answer your question -I’d ask for 2 naps.

I was in the same situation when my DD started nursery, within a week she started having a long (2 hour) midday nap in line with the other kids. She ended up sleeping much better at night as well!

Nursery are wizards with sleep. They got my contact-napping DD down for a nap in a floor bed on her first day.

Nursery should do what you ask them to, or at least try. My DD was on 2 naps when she started nursery at 12 months old, so that's what she did, and she didn't always have both naps but they did try. She's just turned 14 months and has recently gone down to one nap, but that was led by us and not nursery.

Our nursery does have a separate room for sleeping (it's a room adjoining the main baby room and there are windows between them) so it is a bit easier for babies to nap.

Nursery will do what you need them to do, but he will be moving to one nap pretty soon anyway
