Temporarily nursery place

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if nurseries offer ad-hoc places? My mum usually has my little girl while I work full time, but she's due to have a 2 week holiday in June. I've booked the one of the weeks as annual leave but can't really use any more to cover the offer week.

Do you know if nurseries can offer a place just for a week?

This will also apply for other times in the year when my mum will want a break/holiday.

Settling in a child takes time and it’s not worth it just for a week

Can dad not take a week as well?

There used to be a place in Crouch End, London, that did ad-hoc childcare. I don't know how pricey it was. You could look into using a temporary nanny, but it probably will be expensive.

Nurseries and childminders don't tend to do ad-hoc childcare, as there is a lot if settling in etc and they may not have a place available.

You’ll have more luck with a nanny agency probably and as your child will be in your home they probably won’t be as upset by change in routine.

I have used sitters and bubble in similar situations (childminder illness/holiday we can’t cover). Basically a temporary nanny, been excellent.

Sadly no a nursery would not offer this and neither would a childminder unless they had a space , if they did I would expect to pay a higher rate as it’s emergency add hock care

Ours does..

Not nurseries normally but there are some ad hoc childcare places around aimed at freelancers. Normally have to pay a certain amount minimum though and I don't think it would be that fun for a little kid to be dropped somewhere new out of the blue so a nanny/babysitter would probably be best as a one off.

They don't normally but some do. Worth ringing round or asking on a local facebook group. The out of school club my kids go to is based at a nursery who do short term and emergency childcare. We had a similar problem when my kids were little and managed to get a childminder who had space as some of her normal kids were on holiday that would be another option. They were a friend of a friend though so thats how I found them.

Why does someone always reply to threads like this with some inane suggestion about the father taking his turn? As if the OP is going to say 'oh what a good idea, I hadn't thought of that, completely forgot that he exists!' There is obviously a reason he isn't able to or isn't in child's life. It's not fun for those of who can't rely on our child's father to struggle. Does it make you feel better to point it out?

Another option might be a uni student as a nanny. They would probably be cheaper but you’d obviously have to find someone with suitable experience and DBS checks. I’m sure they exist. Try posting in the student room?

Ours would if we had space when it was required.

Call the local nurseries and ask. Some may be quieter atm.

My DD's nursery would as long as they had space on each day. They've had DD for me at very short notice before when I've been unexpectedly ill and not able to make other arrangements.

I don't think they would do it for a child who wasn't already registered/regularly attending though.

Could you afford for your DD to go for 1 or 2 sessions a week?

Just thinking that would give you options, DD would be familiar with the place, nursery could be more likely to up her hours when you needed them, and you would have peace of mind if your Mum not available
