Hi mums I need advice.We live in Swansea.My boy will be 5 on 21.07.2021...Now he is in private City Day Nurcery and he is pre-school.He need to start a proper school next year .I am not really sure how I have to apply. I phoned a few schools for advice and I been told I just will fill a form to move him from this Nurcery to another school.They sad I have to fill the form 5 weeks before his birthday.And he will be able to start in September 2021.
Would you pls give me an advice if that is right.I want to double check , because many times I hear different opinions and I get confused.Thanks in advance

Hi, Where I live you had to have applied by end of January 2021 to get a space for this September and will be advised in April on what school you have. They write to all parents the year before a child starts school to start this process . I would look on your local authorities website to find out how to apply as it has nothing to do with the individual schools they don’t allocate the spaces the council does. Did you defer a year as your son should have started school September just gone if he is turning 5 this July .

Shouldn’t he have started last September? I thought Wales was the same as England but I might be wrong. Starting this year will mean he’ll go in to year one. You’ll need to apply for an in-year admission. Contact your local authority.

So you are asking about how to apply for a school place, not a nursery? I don't know about Wales, but in England, the applications were due in January. I would call the school you are planning to apply to (usually this is the one closest to you) and ask them how you apply in your area.

Why did he not start reception last September?
The deadline for applying for this year was in January and school places are allocated next month for September this year
Your best bet is to speak to someone in your local education authority
