Nursery will not calpol

Dad here. Nursery says they cannot now give paracetamol to 2 yo unless it has been prescribed. Can anyone enlighten me please? It is not always possible to drop work and dash to the nursery because child has a temperature and I do not understand why nurseries can no long give a dose of calpol pending collection of the poorly child.

It's the same rule in schools. To avoid medically unqualified people dosing children willy nilly I should imagine. Assumed 'Common sense' wouldn't stand up in court.

We have the same rule at school. In this age of the compensation culture, businesseses and organisations need to be careful. They don't have to agree to give any medication at all tbh. They could just insist you keep dc at home until better.

If they have a temperature without calpol then they are too sick to be at nursery or school
I know most parents ignore the guidelines due to the way our society treats illness, but actually they are right and stops kids being overdosed on paracetamol because of breakdowns of communication. It is much more dangerous for a kid to overdose even slightly as their liver does not process things as quickly and could cause damage

Nice guidance are that you shouldn’t treat a temperature with calpol. If they have other symptoms that mean they do need it then, especially at pre scjool age they probably shouldn’t be in.

I think a lot of parents are too quick to try to mask symptoms with calpol just to send them in

It very much depends on the nursery/school. Dds will quite happily and my school have just started to give it too (both settings buy it.)
We gave written consent to nursery but they will contact parents before giving to check.

I think I have been very lucky with my nursery.

If your child has a temperature you need to be dashing to the nursery to take them home! They’re sick and shouldn’t be in nursery.

All schools and nurseries my kids have been to have required ANY meds to be prescribed

I would be really frustrated with this, our DS'S nursery will but have to call us to check ok and get us to sign a form on collection. I disagree with previous posters that if they have a temp then they are unwell and shouldn't be in anyway, my DS has been teething for over a year, he's not unwell but can get a temp and be a bit grizzly...should I have taken a day off and kept him out of nursery every single time? Ridiculous!

Well if your nursery changes it’s policy you’ll Have to. Or just let him be in pain.

That wasn't the point fortunately it isn't the case at his nursery , you said he is 'unwell' if he had a temp and shouldn't be in. Teething and having a slight temperature is not 'unwell' Or certainly not unwell enough for a parent to have to leave work regularly to collect or administer calpol!

My DS’ private nursery give it, including under two. Calpol can help a child with a cold feel more comfortable, or a teething toddler. DS’ molars were coming through for months - we obviously couldn’t take all of that time off work but it would seem very unfair to let him be in pain when he didn’t need to be by denying Calpol.

Ours do but you have to collect within 4 hours.

Our nursery is the same. No meds unless prescribed.

Is it? Could you point me in the direction of where you got this information? Not something I came across unless advice has changed recently.

Our school won't even take a temperature so there's no way of knowing if they have a fever until you've collected and taken them home!

Ours used to have a form where you could state time/dose and then they stopped it to prescription only.

DD has always suffered with teeth coming through. She’s 10 and i gave her some last night for a tooth coming out!

Had a quick look and this research from 2015 says children are less prone to paracetamol induced liver damage. Because their livers metabolise more quickly.

@angelastorm73 interested to know where your statement comes from? I’ve been out of biochem since 2014 so would like to read any data if things have changed.

Our nursery allow calpol administration with a signed permission, however, once it's given, parents have an hour to come and pick the child up.

Eh? My DS's nursery certainly does (most recently yesterday). I signed a permission form when he started, and they can and do give Calpol when they detect that a child is unwell and has a temperature.

If your child has a temprature don't send them to nursery.

If a child needs paracetamol it either should be prescribed or the kid should be home.

Don't send children to any kind of school ill and dont overuse paracetamol
