Moving up to toddler room... Clingy DS

My DS (just 2) has moved from the baby to toddler room at nursery this week. So far they've told me he's been brilliant and really enjoyed himself but the last 2 nights he's woken very upset at 4am wanting to be held/get in bed with us. I've tried to ask what's wrong but his language isn't quite good enough for him to explain yet. This morning he absolutely bawled all the way to nursery and when he was left. The nursery are wonderful, I've been suspecting recently that he's getting a bit bored in the baby room so I think the move is right. But at the same time I think it's stressing him out. Hopefully the Christmas break will give him a bit of time to decompress. Any wise words from anyone who's been there?

Just to add, for context, he's also been pretty clingy during the day starting last weekend, wanting to be held all the time, lots of hugs and kisses. Looking back I'm wondering if he had taken in the message from nursery staff that he would be moving after the weekend and was worried
