Advice on baby that cant walk being put on concrete

Advice appreciated. My 16 month old has not met his milestones in time with children at nursery and at the moment is still not walking.
The little ones between 1 and 2 are taken to play outside between grass and concrete and by concrete i mean an actual concrete playground no safety ground. My son is left to crawl on his knees on this with a 1 to 3 ratio.
If its a ome on one fine but i went to collect him amd he was almost doing a forward roll.
I have raised my concerns before this but clearly, I've been ignored.

They should appreciate that your son hasn't met that milestone and react accordingly. Is there a younger room below his room? I wouldn't be happy with my son crawling on concrete. 16 months isn't that old to not be walking - it's probably on the later side than normal but I think 15/16/17 is not abnormal so they should be used to having babes/toddlers that aren't at the same level.

If there is a younger room, could you perhaps ask that your son is popped with them whilst they decide to play outside?

I have no real advice re nursery but wanted to reassure you that your ds isn't 'behind' I imagine it's hard to ignore them not hitting milestones at average times when they are at nursery and surrounded by others of the same age!
My ds wasn't walking on his 2nd birthday, he bum shuffled & crawled and didn't walk until he was about 27 months! He is now 13, can walk at a terrific pace and by far the fastest runner amongst his friends.
I hope nursery can be more accommodating, they all develop at their own pace and they should tailor their care to each individual child

He moved from the baby to 1 to 2's only a month ago. To be frank i raised my concern and the staff member challenged for 10 minutes so i had a go thr next day and informed the manager yet i still find him head down on concrete.
Contemplating contacting the area manager but having him in the baby room is a good suggestion although they may not accept him.

Him not walking isnt my panick.... yet ha but concrete is. His knees looked sore on friday.

That's so odd as my son is older and still in with the babies - they are transitioning him for July but they accommodate all met and unmet milestones - for instance my son often needs a long nap just before lunch whilst the toddler room does naps afterwards, so they just take him back down to babies on the days he's in the bigger room.

Do you feel unhappy with the care at the nursery? It sounds similar to one I had my son in for a bit (was the initials BB) which for the most part was really good but I often found they stuck to a very regimental age range and if the babies didn't meet that criteria, they'd do it anyway.

Yes that nursery is the one hes in with an Ofsted of 1 im disappointed. Not my only issue. Losing his nappies and wipes etc. I feel like im constantly moaning and the ratio is often not what it should be.

Does your baby not crawl on concrete at home though? Do you have a patio that they go on?

I don't think it's odd that they're letting him crawl around outside, our nursery said that they would do that unless we specifically said to carry him or strap into a pushchair. We just bought some knee pads and let him get on with it, I thought that was normal?

If you aren't happy with nursery then move him, it's no good you being anxious about leaving him there, it can't be good for your stress levels.

@potteringalong. If he has a one to one ratio thats fine. And no i let him go on the grass. Illaid him on the path.
The nursery is a 1 to 3 ratio and often theyre not watching him. Id just be generally p*ssed off if he falls and hits his head on concrete (as he still falls back)

I have 2 older sons 16 and 11 so not a new OTT mum if a child isnt walking and you cannot give them your undivided why pit them on concrete? Do you?

What’s the problems with him crawling on concrete? My baby has just turned 1 and will crawl over our grass and concrete. It’s not like there’s far to fall if crawling.

Well I have 3 children ages 6, 3 and 1 so yes, I do let mine crawl on concrete with a 1:3 ratio and without my undivided attention. I’m in the garden with them but I don’t stop him going on different parts of it.

Oh I see he falls backwards. Has he had any falls in the garden?

I wouldn't be happy with a baby crawling on concentrate. I understand kids have to learn about hard surfaces but if he's out there he hasn't got a choice - if you're at home in the garden and a baby chooses to crawl over concrete rather than grass, it's a bit different.

OP - is there any other nurseries nearby? Or even commutable distance? I wouldn't want to send my child to one with that low a rating.

No 1 is outstanding on the ofsted. Thats why i went there. And thanks to those that see my point. Its the falling back and not walking issue. If he was walking and had better balance it would be fine. My opinion is that a child that isnt steady shouldnt be left to concrete but each to there own. It was just good to know others see my point.

I'm a nursery manager and i don't let the babies crawl on concrete outside
They go on the grass or on a rug and the tiny ones to in a special pop up pod that contains them, it's like a ball pool without the balls
I would advise that you speak to the manager and make your wishes clear, that you are not happy with your baby crawling on concrete and can they provide a rug for the garden

I agree with insancerre that you should ask them to adapt the area

I dont think he should have been kept with the smaller babies based purely on not walking

No way would I be happy with a baby lying on concrete. That's nuts. If he goes backwards and cracks his head it could nasty. I'd ask for him to move back down or I'd switch nurseries. They are risking a head injury and it's just plain not nice for the baby. I'd question how kind they are to him in general if they are happy to plonk him down on concrete.
