Unsupervised sleeping

Quick question...

Does anyone know if children can be left sleeping in a separate room in a nursery with no supervision?

Yes they can
The law says children must be within sight or hearing
That could be a baby monitor

So long as there is some sort of monitor I don’t think a nursery could realistically spare a member of staff to supervise sleep in person. There would need to be someone in the sleep room all day otherwise

Yes, one nursery we looked at had a 'cot room' which was basically a walk in closet with no windows and no lights and they put the babies in there at nap time. The only requirement was to check on them every 15 minutes. Frankly, it made me really uncomfortable. It felt like a prison cell. Not all our like that obviously, just an example that yes, it's quite typical that they are left unsupervised just like you likely would at home for naps or at least part of the overnight. At my daughter's nursery (we didn't choose the awful one with the prison cell room!), someone might be in there if they needed to be (with a child who was awake, they didn't always nap at the same time). Otherwise, they had a monitor and were just down the hall (it was a very small nursery, more like the set up in a private home). If they were going outside though, someone would stay inside with the children who were napping or they would take them outside with them and they'd sleep in the buggy in the garden or on a mat in the shade in the summer.

They might have chosen the 'prison cell' because it was easy to keep it dark for naps?

But I totally agree with following your gut instinct if it doesn't feel right.

We always have a member of staff, if not more than one member of staff monitoring sleeps. All children go down at the same time and the younger babies obviously just sleep whenever they need to throughout the day. We would never ever leave children alone in a room whether or not they are asleep or awake! Our nursery is very open plan so staff can are within sight or hearing pretty much throughout the whole nursery but we still wouldn’t leave sleeping children alone!

Im a qualified level 2 they absolutely cannot be left alone for the following reasons
1.SIDS
2.overheating
3.suffocation
We do checks every 10 minutes on the children and this is logged via our parent platform aswell as what time the child went to sleep and what time they woke ,its also advisable to take any toys or comforters away once they are sleeping .If your nursery isn't following protocol please inform ofsted

Ofsted law states they must be supervised and checked every 10 minutes unless yous arent in the UK??

There's no 'Ofsted Law', but the EYFS states that sleeping children must be frequently checked to ensure that they are safe.
