He started off loving nursery now he screams and holds his breath [sad]

Ds (2.7) started nursery for a couple of mornings a week in January. He is a very confident sociable little boy and started off loving nursery to the point that he would cry when I collected him and ask to go on his days off.
A couple of weeks ago one of the nursery nurses said that he seemed a little unsettled he was complaining of feeling tired and was upset by a new girl who was having problems settling. Last week he screamed blue murder and said that he did not want to go and today he has just done the same.
I don't understand why would he change like this. It is a lovely nursery and the staff are really caring I have 100% confidence in them. I ask him why he doesn't want to go anymore and he just says that he wants to play at home. Has anyone else encountered this? Any tips on what to say or do with ds?

ds has started this recently, he is 3.5.

I think there were problems with a specific child which although have been resolved now, upset ds's relationship with other children so those who were his friends are not now.

I explain to him that I am really sorry but he cannot stay home all of the time as I have to work, also I have done things like get up slightly earlier and explain to ds that although he has to go to nursery, if he is good, we can do something fun before he goes - this usually amount to a "picnic breakfast" with a cloth on the floor in the lounge.

I am interested to see if anyone has any better ideas about what to do.

My DS has been going to nursery full time since he was about 4 months old, so you can imagine my shock when he started crying and refusing to go at the age of 3.5yrs - it was heartbreaking hearing him say he wanted to go to mummy work with me. He then gradually got more withdrawn and bad tempered. I spoke to the nursery staff who had noticed his behaviour going downhill and we couldn't fathom out what was wrong, all he would say is I don't want to go. Anyway it all came to a head when I was called in to nursery for my son stabbing another child with his fork. I was mortified this was really out of character - anyway it all turned out to be another little boy who continually bullied my ds when the staff weren't looking. After that the staff kept them apart, made sure they ate at diff tables etc and now eveything went back to normal. Don't know if my little story helps - got kinda carried away there!

Thanks for your advice. I am thinking that perhaps he is upset at the new children who have not quite settled in yet. He hates to see anyone upset. When I collected him today they said he was a lot more settled than he has been on his last few sessions.
