New Nursery worries

My dd has been in nursery since she was 6 mths for three days a week. She starts full time nursery at our chosen school in sept (shes 4 in nov)but we are moving this week and I have had to find her a new nursery for the next 6 mths.

I have found one that looks ok but when she went for an intro session last week (1.5hrs) I noticed that they has the radio on in the pre school room all the time. It was on a local station playing the usual stuff, not nursery rhymes or such. It was quite loud and I found it quite distracting.I asked dd was it on all the time and she said yes but turned off when they had tea.

Has anyone else heard of this? The children in the new nursery pre school seemed very boisterous compared to the children in her existing nursery. It always seems very calm when I pick her up at the moment, all the children playing or making. Last week I turned up and it was like bedlam with all food all over the floor.

My DS was in a Nursery from age 7 months to going to Reception - his nursery never had the radio on - and in all honesty I do not think it is a good idea - I agree with you that is would be too much background noise and would be distracting - but also, for the older children who can speak - they could repeat things they hear on the radio that could be inappropriate. I would talk to the nursery manager about it.

No experience of nurseries but it sounds v inappropriate. We have the radio on in the bathroom when we bath DS but that's about it (well sometimes in the car). WHY would they put it on at nursery? Have heard it can hinder speech development if there is always background noise like TV or radio when they are really little. Sounds like it is for the staff's benefit. Would not even think it is appropriate to have neverending nursery rhymes. Could you try speaking to some of the other parents and ask them what they feel about it?

I have the radio on in the car but complained to my recent station recently as the dj swore on air and dd was in car!

When we go back again I am going to mention it and depending on thier response I might look at another nursery.

Its a nightmare.I just wished I could move her current nursery to our new area

Big no to having the radio on all day.

Recent research (As seen on national news) has shown that constant background noise can cause difficulty for children's ability to pinpoint and listen to key voices e.g. mum, key worker, etc.

How do the kids ever listen to each other and develop the ability to speak and interact.

If staff listen to the radio all day, do they talk to the kids.

I would check out the nursery with other parents locally, perhaps check out their lastest OFSTED

I am a nursery assistant and i have worked in a few nurseries, and Iv'e never known them to ave a radio on. we always played maybe nursery rhymes or chilled out cds, but never the radio, i can't see how they would achieve anything by this, as like everyone says they cud start coming out with anything and learning not very good words

One of the nurseries I recently worked at had the radio on all day every day at quite a loud volume.

I have to say this nursery was appaling...I wouldn't even send my dog there TBH. The kids were neglected there (1 poor child being left in a wet top all day long and left to cry because his chest was sore). There was some pretty inappropriate things broadcast on air and the staff wanted to listen more to the radio then attend to the children.

1 little girl (24 mths old) also picked up 'shut up, just shut, shut, shut up' by the Black Eyed Peas from the classroom radio much to the amusement of my fellow nursery nurses who openly encouraged her by singing it to her and the other children.

They played the radio in my daughter's nursery for a while. It was so irritating. I took it up with the nursery manager and she actually had the gall to blame it on the children! "Oh yes, the children were turning it up, but they've now moved on to the next stage, so won't be a problem anymore." I had to raise the issue again with them because as in your case, it was loud and the music wasn't child focused, it was for the benefit of the nursery staff. But I was flabbergasted the manager even considered holding the children accountable for it, rather than the ADULTS in charge of the room.

My Ds nursery plays CD's throughout the day - not constantly. Not at a loud volume but it is on in the background. It tends to be a current album chart. After lunch a specific 'chillout' cd is on for sleep time.

I don't mind the music playing and don't find it intrusive into DS's interaction with keyworkers & the other children.

Defo odd - my ds's nursery will sometimes play nursery cd's when they are having free time or tidying up but they don't have something on as background noise ever - the kids are enough noise as it is!!! Is there somewhere else she can go - or can you speak to them about the purpose of the radio and that you feel it is inappropriate?
