Anyone else think this is a bit strange and possibly a bit out of order?

Today being the first Nursery day of the month, DD came home with this month's newsletter

Right at the end, as a sort of "By the way.." it said that the nursery will be closed from 6pm Fri 21st December to 8am Wed Jan 2nd. This leaves us up shit creek on Christmas Eve (a Monday this year) which is a normal working day for me, DH and anyone else who might be able to look after her on that day.

DH and I work in the food industry and we are ridiculously busy over Christmas - it would be very difficult for either of to take Christmas Eve off as it is one of the busiest days of the year.

Are we justified in being annoyed that the nursery will be closed on what is, after all, a normal working day for an awful lot of people?

Or am I over-reacting????

how long did they close for over xmas last year? do they normaly have a week off...
I suppose they have given you a years notice to find alternative childcare...

I can understand what a pain it is, but in honesty - no, I don't think it's out of order. It's completely standard. They usually coincide roughly with when school finishes. Sorry it causes you problems.

Probably not what you want to hear but I think it's pretty par for the course. Nurseries are much more likely to have longer holidays whereas childminders tend to be a bit more flexible. At least you've got 11 months to sort childcare for xmas eve out!

Standard I'm afraid. I find it frustrating too as DP and I usually work between xmas and new year and it means we've paid for a weeks childcare that we have no access to.

ur over reacting, assuming that its xmas eve 2007 that they are giving u notice of then you have a whole year to sort out child care.

that seems late to be closing anyway, most schools/nurseries round my way close between 15th and 19/20th.

Possibly a move to a childminder anyway, for all sorts of reasons, not just this one.

I realise that Xmas eve isn't a normal working day for everyone, but it's not a bank holiday and it's not in the lull between Christmas and New Year so I had assumed that the nursery would be open.

Unfortunately I have it for a reason, particularly in the summer...

I think it depends what you were lead to believe when dd started at the nursery and what you are paying for - do you have any introductory info you can look out - are they clear about the Christmas closure then? If they say they work up to Christmas Eve then you have grounds for talking to them IMO.

I do but dont know if I would want to work Xmas eve this year as its a monday bit different.

My dd's nursery used to open all through and then one year changed so that it closed over Christmas - it was a real pain as it was the only nursery that was open over Christmas.. you get used to it. Mydd is at school now so with a child minder and she also doesn't work over Christmas. It is a reet PITA though!

ours closes over christmas too. not a problem, you have a year to get it sorted.

i'm a childminder and clearly state that i finsh the day b4 christmas eve so i can have christmas eve off with my children (normally take them to the panto)

must be a standerd thing as i printed off my hol list on Jan 1st

at least they gave you a yrs notice

at my childrens primary school they print off school hols then add that there are 3 days for teacher trainning days which we will be forwared the dates nearer the time then they give you 2 wks notice ahhhhhhhh

wait till dc is at school then the fun will start
