a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm?

My husband said ours should as it is a public building. Wanted to know what the law was and the feeling on it. I feel like making a fuss about them getting one but don't want to antagonise them if they don't have too. Though my child's safety is the most important thing and I would risk hassel to protect her. Also the nursery is in quite a small one in terms of size and I wonder whether that has anything to do with them not have a SM.

Goodness, I did waffle on there.

Are you sure they don't have a smoke alarm? They would surely have to pass fire regs for a business I would have thought?

Errm not sure but am now going to check as I tought it was law they had to have this type of thing installed - especially the smoke alarm.

I asked yesterday. They have a crap carboard CM alarm and when I asked about a SM she looked around and gave a look that said no.

beofre making a fuss at nursery, why not check with the fire safety officer at the council/ fire brigade, and see what the regulations actually are, and whether there are any recommendations over and above them? Go in armed with facts.

My dd's nursery definitely had fire/ smoke alarms, they had a drill once a week. As it was in an old school building with high ceilings, and somewhat draughty (!) I suspect CM poisoning wouldn't have been much of a problem, but not sure if they actually had an alarm. Know the boiler was well away from the rooms where the children were!

I have just phoned the council and the nursery doesn't have to have smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors. Apparently OFSTED doesn't like to impose too many things because of the cost. . You can get a smoke alarm for a fiver and carbon monoxide detectors are only around £30-40. I am going to speak to my husband about buying them one.

Right, the Ofsted standards state
'Fire blankets, extinguishers, alarms and smoke detectors which conform to BS EN safety standards are provided as necessary, checked to the frequency specified by the manufacturer and kept in working order'
And I'm sorry but imho all nurseries should have them. I am a childminder and at my last Ofsted inspection they checked I had a fire balnket installed and smoke alarms, they didn't ask about a CO detector but I stated to them that I did. Another part of the standards states that the nursery 'complies with any recommendations made by the Fire Safety Officer', surely the FSO would have recommended smoke alarms at least.
BTW sorry for going on but I think childrens safety should come before cost.

So do I! I will be speaking to the manager tomorrow and asking her to ask the owner to get the neccessary alarms.

hmmmm bit strange. i could not get passed until i had a fire alarm system in place (not just smoke detectors but the whole lot with sprinklers etc)

now i am connected upto the fire station

carbon monoxide detectors are not mandatory but it is good practice to have one (we do)
