What should I ask about at nursery tour?

I am going to look at a few nursery options for my dd (6 months) and I am not sure what I should ask about? I have read the inspection reports and looked for info online, but what questions should I ask them when I am there? I am terrible for thinking about important question after the fact - please help me to plan for this so I don't leave kicking myself for not asking something obvious!

Depends what matters to you. I check on the food and how it was prepared and the outside facilities. I could see the staff were engaged and caring by their interactions with the other children.

Think about what matters to you and what your child likes to do and check that they fit the bill.

Ask about the structure during the day, where they have naps, do they sit down together for snacks, what their sickness policy is, staff turnover and their experience, how drop off and pick up works, nursery hours, how many weeks they are closed during the year, how they help little one to settle in...

Make a list of the important questions so you don't forget them.

I found the most important thing was to open my eyes and trust my instincts. Did the children seem happy and engaged?

I've been told off by DH for asking awkward questions - im an early years practitioner! Always ask about illness policy as you need to know what happens if your child is sick. Collection policy is also worth knowing. Ask about how much free play time children get. Especially preschoolers as this is really important for development.
Personally I think you know the right place by gut instinct. Do you like it? Are you comfortable there ? Do you feel safe or under pressure? That's what I'd look for.
