Primary Schools in Croydon

Hi there,

My husband's work has transferred him and us to Croydon from Singapore. I have a 8 year old boy and a 6 year old girl. They were both in Primary one and three respectively back home. Now that they have to transfer, I am slightly confused as to where I should transfer them to.

Can anyone recommend good primary schools in croydon area? I hear there are state and independent schools. What is the major difference between both? Is independent schools better than state schools? What are the top few state and independent schools in Croydon etc... I hear St. David's school is good? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! =)

If you want state schools I think the sanderstead schools are the best. Atwood, ridgeway and Gresham. My kids go to ridgeway and it is a very good school although Atwood is better if you want a more structured, academic school. Results are pretty much the same at both. Catchment areas are pretty small so you would have to live in sanderstead which is lovely but more expensive than much of Croydon. Royal Russell is a good independent school and I have heard good things about st davids.

Yes, a friend of mine has a kid in st. david's and has had some glowing comments about the school. But I just wanted to ask around whether there were other schools as well. Academic studies are pretty important to me. I'm roman catholic as well so I did consider some of the state schools. Would be living near Purley so I wonder whether catchment would be a problem?
