What age to move nursery?

My DS is now 2 1/2 (3 in July) and I have a second due next month. Last year we moved house and went from being 10 minutes away from nursery to being 25 mins away. At the time we didn't move him to the local nursery (which is lovely and only 2 mins walk away) because they had a waiting list for under 2s. We decided that given he loved his nursery and had lots of friends there and it was still close to DH's office for drop off and emergencies (although my work is 30 mins away, so it is an hour's round trip for pick up!) we'd not bother moving him.

But now that I'm going on maternity leave and I'm thinking ahead to DS starting school, I want to move nurseries - when is the best time to do it? DS will stay part time in nursery during my mat leave, but do I need to worry about too much change all at once? Should I wait until he'd move up to the preschool room in September or do it earlier and then he'll settle into the room below and move up with new friends?

I would look at the room ages in the two nurseries and move him to minimise the transitions with the proviso that he doesn't change close to the time the new baby is born as that us plenty of change to deal with on its own and you don't want him to associate the baby and the move.
